Figure app
Using the app figure how is the best way to export a groove from figure? I’m using cubasis unless you have a better suggestion but I would like to take a groove from this app and build upon it any ideas?..
Comments
Yeah I used to use Figure a lot. Not sure if it still works the same these days, but I remember you could actually export the individual stems by saving copies of the groove with different tracks muted, so you could get each part separately.
It exports perfectly timed stems/loops so you can just drop in a Cubasis audio track and copy/paste to build it back up.
I was never a Cubasis user at the time when I used Figure. Instead, I exported the stems and loops to audioshare, trimmed them into smaller but still perfectly timed pieces by using the divisions function in audioshare, and transferred them to Korg Gadget where I assigned them across the trigger pads in Bilbao. Set them all in the same choke group. I was then able to reconstruct the smaller chops back into the original groove plus also trigger them in any other way for variations of the beat, stuttering effects and things like that. It worked perfectly well and in the end result, you could not tell that the grooves and beats were actually made up of very short samples all being triggered one after another. You just need to make sure there's a very VERY tiny, like 5-10ms I think, fade at the beginning and end of each little chop, to avoid clicking and popping on sample playback. All audio samples/loops should ideally start and end on the zero crossing.
Of course, the Cubasis way is much easier than what I've just described with what I used to do with Figure and Korg Gadget! 😁
Just to confirm, it still works well. Under the Browse section in the Figure app, hitting the bottom-left blue square allows you to export the current song as an audio recording to whatever app you choose - Cubasis works well as a target or something like AudioShare is a nice convenient option if available. As Spidericemidas mentioned above, you can capture the individual drum, bass and lead stems by selectively muting two of the three before exporting the track. It's also handy to take a note of the tempo setting in Figure for reference later on. (If you're using Gadget, another option is to import the audio clip into a Zurich instance which you can set to the appropriate number of bars. Everything lines up neatly if the tempo is set to the Figure value.)
Back in the Allihoopa days, you also could import a Figure track into Reason I believe, although I'm not sure if that functionality is still available. I think the underlying Figure file format is based on XML but I don't know if there's a straightforward way to export the note data without delving too deep into the specific schema.
As another option, I often screen capture Figure recordings using the built-in screen recording option on iOS and then upload it to put on my Instagram page - nice easy way to share a groove. My attempts are hopeless 😂 but I do enjoy noodling away and I'd be interested to see if anyone else is still using Figure these days. It's such a great intuitive app for knocking out a quick beat or snippet of a melody or groove.
(First time poster, long-time reader and fan of this wonderful forum. I've learned so much about the possibilities of iOS music making from the many kind, funny & knowledgeable folks who frequent this site. So many amazing apps, tools and opportunities to make music. Many thanks to Michael & the Audiobus team for establishing such a great resource and a great app as well 🙂. )
Yeah... for cubasis you could follow Jakob's video
But you have two other options with his workflow. No audiobus, just use audioshare > record > click on the microphone and choose figure as input (IAA)
Or as I recall, just add figure (IAA) inside cubasis directly. I uninstalled cubasis for a time because of storage, so I can't double check
@elumasonic welcome behind the curtain
AND, quick check, no probs recording Figure audio bing-bang-boom (technical term) into Cubasis...
But currently, my preferred option is recording into Beatmaker 3's pads, because of some quality of life features:
this got me to try out figure again- fun as always. ove always enjoyed the param automation mechanic
one thing i noticed which is a key to exporting solo-ed stems from the Figure share function (into Files which is nice. Funny to think Figure was around before Files…) is that each solo stem needs to be saved as a separate file. you don’t have to keep renaming, tho Jakob does, you can just save each solo track as the same thing…one by one.
i like this BM3 idea of @senhorlampada
Can you use a midi controller with figure??
Looks like this app got hijacked. Sad.
Hijacked? Not sure what you mean.
It is still in the app store.
I’m confused by this as well. I just opened the app and all seems fine.
I re downloaded and after skipping the intro, there’s something that blocks from using the app. I’ve deleted and resintalled. Same on iPhone. Weird.
And that something is...?
Tap on the cube on top of the popup and you're golden.
Doesn’t go away.
It's fiddly, took 2 or 3 tries, but works for me. The reason logo in the middle of the top bar.
Made a very cool little thing by accident while waiting outside the changing rooms and now I want to bring it into my iPad and be all proper and serious. Any kosher ways to import/export FIGURE projects as far as you* know.
*The great collected and always warm you and also YOU you irrespective of your temperature. Thank you.
Just export the song with the parts muted
Will give it a try, thanks. That does sound smart for the stems/audio recordings per track, but I don't see anywhere in files that the Figure projects thenselves are saved so I can grab and import them from the phone to the ipad and then keep working on them etc. Any ideas? Anyone? Or is that just not a possible thing....?
