Novation launchpad or…..apps

As the title says would this be a good choice for a midi controller?. I love the fact that it has scale mode and it’s within my dudget, then again does everyone use a midi controller or would the price be better spent on apps????

Comments

  • Yes, launchpad mini mk3 is with me, replaced all knobs and faders, only launchpad, and Im happier.
Less combinations, less used space, simpler.
But must have is the loopy pro, as it expand launchpad functionality.
Sure you can control atom2 or LK , but loopy offers audio, donuts can also Send midi commands - in session view on launchpad (automap buttons on/off).
I not use scales, but sometimes in loopy pro standalone faders on launchpad are useful - it is possible to switch midi profile, so faders on launchpad can control different destinations.

  • Launchpad Pro MK3 is awesome!
    Nice polyphonic aftertouch pads, sequencers…

If you search the forum, you will find a lot of discussion of them. They are popular. Imo, go with the best one in your budget. The C and Pro have velocity-sensitive pads and per-note aftertouch. The minis don’t, I believe.

  • And to add to what espiegel123 said, I think not all LP models support low-power consumption mode, or whatever it’s called. In other words, I need to have my phone or iPad connected to a powered usb hub for my LPX to work. I think, but not certain, that some models will operate without a powered hub, but the pads will not light up. My model won’t work at all without a hub, but I love my LPX. They recently did a firmware update too. But search the forums, lots of information, you will find.

  • mini mk3 works directly without power, iPad usbc cable and mk3 mini can works by hours - but I didnt use it to enter notes (no velocity).

How does loopy add to the ability for the Launchpad?

I was leaning towards a used Launchpad x simply because that is what my budget allows

Loopy pro automap donuts to launpad session mode. Even in auv3.
Donut can be audio or dummy (empty) and can send midi to choosen port.
That way launchpad by loopy allow to save state buttons „midi” plus add all the loopy pro audio possibilities.
Of course it is 1% of the possibilities, but in my personal opinion at 08-2022 ;) very effective.
Buttons are big, lighting, simple, and with Feedback (automap) in session mode auv3.

I’m looking at getting the Launchpad x

  • I think loopy pro support this model, better to confirm first…

    Loopy supports Launchpad X

  • I’d really like to get a Launchpad one day because the Launchpad app is one of my favorites on iOS. Having a controller just for that would be awesome. Not mention everything else you can do with it.

  • Anyone interested in a Launchpad should really consider the Pro MK3. The possibilities with the sequencers and the extra custom pages are incredible. I know it’s a lot of money, but it was totally worth it. Best hardware purchase so far. 🙏🏼

  • I believe, but is it not a bulky sized?

I also subscribe the the app….it’s really cool. I often route it into cubasis…loads of fun

    Not bulky at all.
It’s a good size with no wasted energy and a Swiss Army knife. Pro MK3 is well worth the money, a true keeper.

Could not have said it better. My space is very limited. I only have a davenport desk (not shure if that’s the right translation for „Sekretär“), so I have to put everything away after use. No problem there.
If you’re on the road a lot, a smaller one might be better suited, but that’s about the only reason I can come up with.

  • I with novation make launchpad 256 or 128 buttons :) really.
Ergonomic ….. first of all I try to remember about breath, and loose my muscles during sessions.

In past I thinked more gear, or more iPads give more power, but now I understand first is to learn how to use myself to given tasks. So with one unit there is still a lot of learning. Also apps are developed nicely, and deeply.

Yes, bigger launchpads are nice too, especially more buttons , and velocity. Appreciate what we have each is a key!

The Launchpad X is a great controller — the scale keyboards and polyphonic aftertouch pair really nicely with MPE apps like Animoog and Quanta, and if you’re using Loopy Pro, LK, or Atom2, you get access to the Session Mode.

The current generation of Launchpads also have, in my opinion, the most comfortable pads of anything I’ve tried. They’re way more precise than my old Push v1 and the velocity sensitivity feels more reliable and predictable (for my fingers) than my MPD226.

I got the Launchpad X right after Loopy Pro launched but ultimately upgraded to the Launchpad Pro mk3. I mainly upgraded for its sequencer, which has solved a few headaches for me; I never quite got into the Atom2 workflow and while LK is a very good sequencer by most standards, the setup and troubleshooting got to me eventually. If you’ve got your sequencing worked out, the X should be great for your needs, but personally I find it worthwhile to save up a bit more and buy the Pro.

EDIT: it’s been said above, but I feel like I should reiterate since it’s a definite pain point for me: if you’re using a Lightning port, you’ll need either a powered USB hub or a USB 3.0 CCK to power the X and Pro. It’s not a huge deal if you’re sitting down close to an outlet, but it makes the Launchpads distinctly less portable than some other controllers.

  • You should consider trying Remixlive as well, as it has built-in mappings for Launchpads. It's working flawlessly with quite a bunch of additional features.

+1. I love mine, and it has the best pads I have tried. Better than the Push 2 for sure.

I also like that the MIDI outs are via 3.5jack, so you can connect to many devices with just a trs cable. Super tidy.

You mind going into that a little? I never thought to use it with cubasis

I like to pitch a different view. I’m personally a fan of GridInstrument as it does what I need my Launchpad to do.

I am however a fan of the Launchkey Mini mk3 25 key.

But anyways, here’s the video that I went into this decision.

Why I’m switching back to the Novation Launchkey as my main controller from the Launchpad (for ...

Back to the question…I see the controller as an extension of the iPad, as opposed to a direct replacement. If you’re trying to decide between a second iPad and a MIDI controller, I’d pick the MIDI controller first. It’ll enhance your use of apps like AUM, GarageBand, Cubasis, and others.
