IPad Mini for iOS music

edited July 2014 in General App Discussion

The missus and I were discussing our cellular plan, and we were looking at upgrading to an iPhone 6 when they pop - but then it seems like taking that money & spending it on an iPad Mini (and just keep the iPhone 5 for a while) might be just as good an idea for my music pursuits - like picking up on iPad apps! What would I be looking for in an iPad mini that will get the job done?

  • It depends...I'm waiting for the next generation of iPads/iPhones hoping they do something about the severe lack of ram this time around. If they bump it up to 2gb then I'm in.

So an iPad mini retina with 2gb of ram would be cool for sure.

  • The insides of the current minis can accomplish quite a lot... Essentially the same chip and RAM.

You should be able to run almost everything pretty smoothly.

A couple of caveats: fat fingers/old eyes beware.

Also, I agree with @davemagoo that new iPads are around the corner. I'm not so sure he'll get his wish for 2GB, though. I completely agree that 2GB might offer some more headroom, especially for running effects in auria, say. But you can accomplish a heck of a lot with today's devices.

If money's tight, I'd buy the next gen mini maxed out. And if it's really tight, I'd buy a refurbished current generation as soon as the new one comes out. Look for ones that were traded in because the owner cracked their screen. You get a brand new screen on discounted device. It's basically like getting a new device.

If money isn't tight, buy a mini now, or buy it now, and plan on reselling it when the new devices come out.

You can always invest in a case and screen protector, allowing you to resell on craigslist "like new". If the form factor doesn't change, rinse and repeat on the new device.

I'm old now, and my advice is if at all possible... don't postpone on purchases that will return value over time. Lost time is worse than lost money.

Which iPad mini models are you planning to get? (1st gen. or retina)

I'm playing with 1st gen model. It works fairly well but the RAM is weak.
So if you'd like to using iPad mini heavily, a retina model would be better.

Btw, I sometimes feel iPad mini is not so playable with synth apps because of the display size, so I guess iPad 4 or above are much better.

  • +1 on getting a better display on the full size model.

I have no problems on my mini retina, and the size just means I use it more. Had first gen mini, used it more than full sized more powerful ipad. Mini all the way with me.

General recommendation is to get the fastest processor possible, so a retina iPad Mini for sure. The rMini is a three generation jump above the original mini as far as specs are concerned, very much worth the price difference. I think the 32 GB model is the minimum needed for basic music needs, but you may already have an idea of your own capacity needs from working on an iPhone. Also, check the "external HD" thread for ideas on storing your projects and samples on a separate wireless drive.

Others here are recommending the full size iPad, but really it is a personal preference. Some people have broader fingertips. Some have narrower ones. Some have poor near vision, some great. I would try out a few devices from friends, or buy direct from the Apple store so you can make use of the 14- day return policy if you decide you would prefer the larger iPad.

  • I've owned all of the iOS hardware except the iPad3 and the air, and I'd say that I like the mini and the standard iPad both for different reasons. It's totally dependent on the app I'm running, and in some cases, it's not an issue at all, but in other cases I prefer one over the other, depending on the layout of the app. The mini retina speed has been fine for every music app I have....and I have a few! Just wish I could use them better/more ;-)

Good advice so far... I haven't looked at anything yet, and certainly wanted to get feedback here before things go any further (if), since music will figure prominently in my usage of it. The screen real estate will be an upgrade from my iPhone, for sure a plus.

And it was the missus's idea!

And we'll see what really happens...

  • The assertion that 32gb is minimum required for basic music needs is totally misleading to people who are on a tight budget and it's IMO simply untrue. I've been happily using a 16gb device over 3gens I've owned and never had a problem. This may be true if one uses a lot of sampled stuff or records a lot of audio but not everyone @Hmtx

me too, all of my pads (2x ipad2 1xrMini) have 16GB and sometimes i have to juggle but 99% of the time i had enough space for all.....
but it depence what do you wanna do, 24Bit multichannel HD-Recording would eat your space faster as you can say "uuuups were is my space...."

but use it as an instrument,
    Rock n Roll!!!

And i am Still happy with the "old" pads....
limited to AB+2Apps (synth+loopy) or (Synth or Drums + FX) okay. but its still playable!!
(sometimes if you use loopy its better to start with an reboot thats the Mem is empty!)

  • A couple of caveats: fat fingers/old eyes beware.

    You bet!

  • It is tough to be an old, fat fingered git in the ios music world

  • Saving snapshots in Cubasis will also eat memory - but - like others I've been managing on 16GB iPads too - all bar one of which (a Target tradeup) I have purchased 2nd user from Cowboom - not advertising - just a satisfied customer - at substantial discount and in "perfect" condition (i.e. there were no obvious faults whatsoever, no scratches - nothing). Having said that - I would much appreciate having a larger memory iPad, - not to mention more RAM - 2GB would be very nice.

I'd also appreciate a faster iPad for working with Auria plugins too - but - again - have been managing.

The flip side is working with fewer resources causes more thoughtfulness in the creation process - and more "ruthless" choices about which apps I want to use / keep - which means that I flounder less and work with a select set of apps that I get to know more deeply :-)

I should add - I currently regularly use 2 16GB mini originals and 2 16GB iPad 3's. I also continue to use an iPad 1 (mainly for sequencing the other iPads and hard and soft synths, although it also continues to be able to run a great many of the music generation apps I use as well).

  • I use an iPad mini retina pretty exclusively (I don't get a look in on the family iPad 2 these days) with the iPod used for when I'm out and about and using the Tascam iM2 mic for location recording. It seems powerful enough to run the combinations of stuff I want - but my current working setup is to take the audio from the various apps into NanoStudio to sequence there and hence don't need to run loads of apps at the same time. Main issues are the obvious ones - smaller screen means smaller on screen controls - but my eyesight is currently fine and I've not noticed major issues using the onscreen controls. Having the camera connection kit and an external keyboard does help.

  • I've had the iPad mini retina and I am generally happy. I perform live using JamUp with no significant issues.
