Excellent. Very interesting. I remember reading about the Buddhist story about tea and it’s quite similar to this guys experience with coffee after 3 months off
Don’t quit cold turkey, you will regret it. Best to taper it down over the course of a week. Believe there’s a book called Caffeine Blues which provides some great info on herbal supplements you can take to make the quitting process smoother for your adrenals. And thank you for the reminder that I need to try and kick it for good ...again.
Natural symbiosis in action, in moderation.
I have pretty much always drank coffee, and have never really had any I’ll effects from stopping for periods of time (usually due to being in a country/situation where it’s not available).
Then again, I can drink coffee close to when I go to bed and still fall asleep pretty quickly.
I always meant to look into the science behind how caffeine works, but never have. My guess would be genetics plays a big part in how much caffeine affects an individual. I probably should find time to read up on it.
Pretty much the same here.![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/lol.png)
Gonna watch the video soon. Just finishing my cup of coffee before working out
Sugar I’d say is a far more dangerous narcotic than caffeine.
A few months ago I read his book that has the chapter he's talking about here and enjoyed it a lot. Especially about the influence of caffeine on western culture after it was introduced; the Enlightenment, etc.. My stomach can have problems with coffee so I pretty much drink tea every morning. I've got a number of different blends and also include green tea with it. I stop soon after breakfast.
I wish I could have drank coffee when I was in high school; I'm sure it would have helped my apprehension; my family discouraged it.
Bach wrote his famous "Coffee Cantata". You can tell it must have helped his amazing output.
same here - I always thought i was in the rare minority! I've never understood those people who are zombies in the morning and can hardly function until they get their morning cup. I can drink it every day for a few weeks, then not have it for a few days with no issues, not even a craving to taste it.
I would imagine the microbiome and many other factors play a part too. 10 years ago I could drink coffee at night no problems, now, definitely not.
100%
When it comes to food, you will always hear 52 differents versions. Meat is a good example. Should we eat meat or not?
I read a book that help me a lot:
He talk about sugar, coffee, meat and more.
Also, each human is different so try to avoid drawing conclusion based on personnal story. Nuts are good for your health but some people will died if they eat nuts.
It's often the dose that makes the poison. In a nutshell, small dose of coffee = good. Big dose of coffee = bad.
A small dose of coffee can be good for the heart and kidneys. It's also an antioxidant.
100% agree, plus some excellent evidence it may be of use in fatty liver disease, from research on mice.
Sugar is the new smoking.
It is not about substance or not, but how we deal with attachement…. Can be materialism, workouts, heavy playing on keyboard for building „carrier”, hazard and more.
Ascetic life can be also kind of addiction.
The middle is not about to be attached to „the middle” idea, but to observe „if I still want something and why - for what?”. And let it go, say Yes to internal wanting, but not follow it like blind. Try to experiment with this or those. The most „easy” idea js to self programming to be automat, and say „I need coffe” or „I dont need coffe”, where each situation is Ok or not Ok, depends.
Clear making something, just for making - like playing for playing, to empty mind, to get touch with breth, to fill rythm of the body, to see what is modus operandi - it is not about to drink coffe or other „power’ drink, or even eat too much, and then do like a monster.
From what I read that's actually true. Apparently there are, largely, two types of people, with one being affected by caffeine much more than the other. You (and i) seem to belong to the second group, so we can drink coffee just for the taste if we want to 🙂.
I'm sure there's more to it than my primitive description though.
If we make an anology with alcohol, some people can drink 15 beers in one day without problem and other cannot tolerate 1 ship (their face become red and sweatty). In a perfect world, each person would have a perfect menu based on their genetic, needs and history.
Narcotic effects lessen with the same dosage, so often the dosage is upped over time, depending on the substance it can lead to an overdose.
thanks for reminding 👍 very true
I didn't watch the vid - not a Joe Rogan fan, but I guess that is Michael Pollan he's talking to? If so he's not wrong about what a high you get after quitting caffeine for a while and then having your first cup. It's truly a beautiful thing. The system very quickly adjusts though, and even after a few days of one coffee a day, returns are seriously diminished. Still love my morning coffee.
Michael Pollan's book on psychedelics is also well worth a read btw 😉
Twenty years old now, but this (then-)unfashionably caffeine-positive book is still worth a read, if very quiet on habituation.
I am pretty sensitive to it so no more than a single cup in the morning or I am screwed. If I drink too much I cant sleep for a couple days. I guess with some people it just floats around their system much longer than others. I tend to not bother with it on weekends or vacations and just associate it with work. I also hate the feeling of being habituated to something. But mmmboy I do love the taste and hell yah, after a couple weeks off it is crazy powerful. I had brunch with someone a couple years ago, for whom caffeine seems to have barely any effect, and they thought I was a raving loon, or 'on something'. Well yah, three cups of the devil's bean juice baby!
Went some years without and never felt right. Then on a motorcycle trip across Vietnam I wasn't going to have some of their coffee. Had one and high as a kite rode into the night. Had one daily since and feel more normal. Some of the health of it depends on if you're a slow or fast metabolizer of it. You can tell that by dna tests and the CYP1A2 gene. If you're a slow metabolizer too much might mess with your heart which will mess with your brain eventually.
Personally, think it's sham energy, toxic to the gut, most is filled with chemicals, terrible for sleep, immunomodulator/suppressant, gets in the way of state practices like meditation. Still drink it daily thought. The poison is in the dose.
