JWM - The Call of the Lonely Siren

I labelled it as "Ambient" on SoundCloud, but it could easily be a soundtrack I guess, or it could serve as both. 🤷 It's definitely a melodic piece of Ambient with no drones or atonality whatsoever in it. It's set in G# Dorian and uses Fugue Machine. Further production notes in the SoundCloud description. Tell me what you think. 🙂

  • I really like the sound. The shimmer that comes through once a while, and the inconsistency in the tape? delay.
14 min. is a bit too long for me to hold my attention, unless it's more storytelling.

    Thanks mate. :)

Exactly! The shimmer is Bleass Shimmer, and the delay Bleass Delay. The inconsistency you heard is most likely due to two things - an unsynced feedback (I used milliseconds), and the fact that Bleass Delay can pitch your delay up or down over a set amount of time. You can be subtle about it to make the delay unstable, or go super wild with it.

That's fair since this piece is meant to be incidental. :) I usually actively listen to Ambient when I'm learning what an artist did and studying the piece (including pieces here). When I listen to my own Ambient, it's always when I'm doing something else unrelated to music (like when making art, paying bills, etc). 😅

  • This is very good, although I think it could have easily been 2, or even 3, pieces.

I particularly like how at about the 4:00 mark that pad slowly oozes in.

    Nice work!

❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much! That means a lot to me.

  • That big roaring sounds like a huge wave coming in. Nice textures. A bit melancholy. :)

  • Nice work! Xx

I’m surprised at myself for never thinking of just letting ambient music run in the background. I’ve always felt like I should give a musical piece 100 percent of my attention but with some ambient music running while doing other tasks I can appreciate it in a way I hadn’t before. Cool piece of music and thanks for the idea.

  • Melodious and quite different from your usual ambient recordings.
    I like this musical production.
    Well done, my friend.

  • Nice track. Beautiful textures with a clear harmonic canvas. I agree with @rottencat , this could be 3 pieces. I'd love to hear a deep and fat drone in the low end on the last part, to anchor to the ground, as a reminder that a siren kiss is a deadly one.

Thank you so much mate. :) Yep, I wanted to evoke a bit of a melancholy emotion. The siren is lonely, but also the men are being lured to their demise.

Thank you so much mate, and yes of course. :) My Ambient isn't necessarily meant to be listened to in the foreground unless you're really trying to study the piece and figure out what techniques the artist(s) used. Ambient is meant to sit in the background to create a mental space for other tasks to be done, or for getting high.

Thank you so much mate. :) I really appreciate the feedback. Yes, I figured to make this piece very heavily reliant on Fugue Machine rather than glued together with a drone like my usual fodder.

That's a pretty cool idea. I didn't consider using a drone only during a section of a piece. I'll think about doing that for my next piece for sure! :)
