GSi ECHO B2 Walkthrough / Demo - a very 'Hainbach' piece of kit!
GSi ECHO B2 Walkthrough / Demo / Big Giveaway
The GSi B2 (Binson Echorec emulation) sounds fantastic - definitely the kind of thing Hainbach would or should have in his arsenal. This video demos the app on a variety of instruments, shows you how to use it, and also shows you how to make it self-oscillate, which can be amazing for feedback / distortion sounds. It is absolutely not your typical delay, but if you like quirky and vintage sounds it might be right up your street.
See the YouTube pinned comment for details of how to win free iOS apps by GSi (Guido Scognamiglio on the appstore), as well as by Audio Symmetric / Ryan Robinson (Zoa / Ooda / Autopad dev) .
The video will premiere any minute now - come in and join the live chat!

Great overview! This delay is such a mysterious sounding cracker. I’m going to experiment some more with the self-oscillate, thinking about putting a slow moving LFO on the ‘length of swell’ knob, great for background textures. Maybe even a reverb or shimmer on top of it.
Yeah, definitely slow lfos on the controls, especially different rates for different controls leads to interesting results, with this and their other varispeed one…
It's definitely a cracker, I love the process of dialing sounds in, such pleasure in experimentation.
How does this compare to the varispeed one?.
And to RE-1 tape machine?. RE-1 is my favorite delay plugin.
I've only experimented with manual control so far, definitely a bit of automation would be fun, but for sure need to put a limiter after it unless you're careful with your lfo ranges 😁
If RE-1 is your favorite, wait till GSI releases their Roland Space Echo (RE-201) remake ‘GS-201 Mark II’ for the iOS

The Roland Space Echo is an iconic tape delay, with a spring reverb onboard, and I believe GSI also added extra’s from the Roland RE-501 with BBD chorus and a 4th head, stereo and sync and so on.
VariSpeed I'm just getting to grips with as I only got it yesterday but have had B2 for more than a week and played around with it a lot. They're basically both very quirky but in different ways.
VariSpeed has some on/ off buttons for its 3 heads which allow you to do sudden presses and de-presses which will do instant changes to the echo effect. This can be fun when performing live, if things are set right, otherwise having all 3 tape heads active can sound very messy. It also allows you to adjust the left and right dry input separately. B2 doesn't.
Like B2 it has a speed control. One very cool feature it has is the on / off knob that allows creative immediate slowdown / startup of the delay effect. B2 doesn't have this.
B2 has 12 different echo types which can be adjusted to huge effect with the slow drum knob. It also allows for totally flexible alignment of all 4 heads. My impression is that B2 is capable of a larger variety of usable delay sounds but like I say, maybe I haven't used VariSpeed enough.
Both are capable of self oscillation but the B2 is FAR wilder in this regard. The VariSpeed is more predictable and - maybe - slightly less interesting for those who love distorted sounds. Iostrakon would definitely go for the B2.
Multiple head set-ups on B2 often sound great. On VariSpeed I mostly find myself using just one head to get a musical result. But it does have a lovely tone when you dial it in right, especially on guitar.
Tldr: both good but different 😂
And as far as both are concerned, the dev should definitely get rid of the pretty pics of the equipment and just give us huge knobs instead. Plus better scaling. But I do really like both apps.
Thanks @Gavinski for the very thorough and helpful breakdown. Seems like B2 is more all-around. Do you own RE-1 to compare?. It also has tape head, wobble and the rest. Wondering if b2 has more “character”.
Thanks!
Thanks Tahiche, that means a lot coming from a pro like you. I do own re-1 but frankly have rarely used it, Too many delays! I'll test them out later and get back to you. I'd be extremely surprised if they sound similar in a direct comparison.
Was just checking the price of a hardware unit of the Echorec on Reverb. $17,500 plus postage 😂
