AUv3 to create convincing singer-songwriter piano track

Is there anything like Toontrack’s EZKeys available as an AUv3?

I’m looking for something to create convincing (rather than randomly generated) piano/keyboard backing tracks in the traditional sense of intro/verse/chorus/break etc in singer/songwriter mode - ballads, pop, rock. I already have a few midi apps like the Rozeta suite, Fugue machine and Scaler 2 - they are all great, but not quite what I’m looking for at the moment. If there isn’t an app that does this, is there a really good source of midi loops, specifically designed for piano/keyboards?

  • Scaler 2 would be the best bet.

+1 for scaler 2. You have access to very comprehensive list of altered chords to embellish your chord progressions. The app can also suggest chords you might not naturally think of, which can lead to beautiful modulations. If you're not satisfied with the onboard piano sound, you can Route scaler 2 MIDI output to either Ravenscroft, Pure Piano, Pure Upright or some of the very good sounding pianos available for free at pianobook loaded inside decentsampler or Audiolayer.

You’re right. I need to look at how to string a number of patterns together quickly within Scaler 2. Thanks

  • Piano motifs seems good for this too.

  • @BillS : the various Session Band apps may also be useful. I periodically use them for mocking things up.

  • When Riffler gets its 2.0 update I recommend trying it with your favorite piano app. I’m using the beta and using the “Rock” preset with the chords settings dialed high out to the bs-16 default stereo grand and I gotta say it’s crazy how well it works.
I’m not sure how much longer it will be before the final release but definitely check it out when it hits the App Store.

+1 for scaler2, work out your chord structures filling up pattern 1 onwards, with verse/chorus/middle8. Use Felt Piano and performances to add complexity and change (Felt Piano is a lovely subtle sound to build on). I then record the output using DAW sync in to Garageband IOS sections (other DAWs are available ;) ) - then go from there :)

I'm also in the beta, and by selecting "scale" then "manual" you can change chords as required. It is certainly another option

Agreed. I've just worked out how to select multiple patterns, (not hard, drag finger across as required 😅) which was the missing piece for me.

+10000000 for Piano Motifs. It’s generative, but very usable and convincingly real. I often generate stuff there and then fiddle with the MIDI in Atom Roll to get what I want. I love layering pianos with the same MIDI input to make stuff more ‘3D’ sounding, and I love using other synths with the same MIDI to create great textures and accent parts.

@Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr @mulletsaison and soon with a long awaited functionality :)

    Huge!

  • Great effort on the AUv3 conversion, @azul3D_Apps. I don't want to introduce any delay or add feature request already (doh), but perhaps you'll be able to look into the possibility to broadcast/share/sync the chord progression between instances, similar to Scaler 2? That would probably be great for multi instances.

  • Another enthusiastic vote for Piano Motifs! The soon-to-arrive AUv3 release will make this an easy pick for generative composing.

  • Didn't mean to hijack this thread, so let's have any discussion of the new Piano Motifs functionality in:

    Yup.

  • I started this post asking for anything like EZ Keys, but having been pointed back to Scaler 2, I’ve spent a few days digging deep and using it to make piano tracks, just like I’ve done for years with EZ keys. And I’m blown away. It’s at least as good, and very easy to introduce subtle human variations in the patterns. What an app. So thanks for pointing out what was already under my nose and what I already owned!

Also, it’s great to hear that Piano Motifs is going AUv3. Had this ages, but for me there was limited use without this functionality - all good!

    👍

  • @richardyot it’s a possible breakthrough moment for me. I’m more than aware of the monthly song club you run, and as a singer-songwriter in the more traditional sense I’ve almost joined in many times in the 2.5 years since I bought Cubasis. Over the past 5 years (since retiring) I’ve released three albums I’m proud of, but all were made in Studio One Pro on Windows.

I’ll have a listen when I get the chance, but just so you know: iOS is not a requirement for the Song Of The Month Club, as mentioned in the first post each month. Stuff done on desktop can also be submitted.

  • @richardyot yes, read that every month, but I always felt I “should” be using iOS 😂 all good
