A reminder that PPG WaveGenerator is 10 Years Old

Last night, I had a dream that the PPG plugins were back on Plugin Alliance, but when I woke up, I felt forlorn. I was hoping that they would be back on WaveGenerator's 10th anniversary, but nothing happened. The plugins were supposed to be updated by October 2020, but what is going on? Brainworx is a reputable developer, but even before their studio was flooded, they were working on the plugins at a snail's pace.

Many customers including me inquired them about the progress, and they were silent. I don't know why Wolfgang Palm decided to give the plugins to Brainworx instead of u-He or Waldorf. Why didn't he even make them open-source. I mean, how much money did he make selling the rights to Brainworx? Although I have not made too much music with the plugins, they have a nice, cold, alien sound not found in other softsynths.

WaveGenerator is so underrated because it is actually THE modern continuation of the old PPG synths, and it greatly expands upon the features by adding interpolation options, a noise generator with adjustable color, a third oscillator, FM, ring modulation, 4 LFOs with adjustable waveshapes, and a total of 13 loopable envelopes! You could also use two amplifiers with individual panning to make clever sounds! It's a shame that the PPG apps and plugins barely had any marketing, promotion, and sales. Also, the GUIs of the plugins turned many people off (WaveGenerator's is actually comprehensive. Just think of the digits as sliders).

Attached is a small bank I made for the desktop version of WaveGenerator using only the factory wavetables. Haven't made an iOS version yet. Hope you enjoy it!

  • Absolutely. Like WaveMapper and Infinite, it's a powerhouse of features and sound but probably a bit too challenging for a lot of people who want the sound but not the complexity of making your own presets.

Thanks a lot for your share!

BTW, have you tried Arturia Pigments or XFer Serum?
For me, the biggest challenge in general is still the creation of usable wavetables from my own samples, there's still too much hand work required to achieve great results.

The sound of Pigments doesn't interest me, and Serum is too expensive. I am thinking of getting Icarus 2 or Modwave native if it comes out.

  • Interesting, @frosttrance_7.
I've heard that Icarus has some tools built in to create user wavetables. I'd be very interested in how good they are and if the wavetables can exported to wav files.

  • 10 years tempus fugit. Love PPG. <3

The harmonic editor in Icarus is very fun to play around with. You can do all sorts of things with the waveforms such as FM, RM, bit reduction, warping, etc.

I still have it on my trusty iPad One.
Back then it was THE indicator that IOS indeed provided a musical capability that no one would have expected from a „tablet“ B)

What can Serum do that Pigments can’t?

User wavetables, many cool filter types, wavetable resynthesis, harmonic editing of wavetables (quasi additive synthesis), much more CPU-friendly.
