Nice coverage, Jakob. You make an excellent point about developers who may be so wrapped up in the design of an app that they might forget they also have to market and sell that app. Good notes for which the developer should be grateful to you.
And although this synth is a bit overpriced (in my opinion), ESPECIALLY because of the patch limitations, it does in fact have a unique sound profile people might want to dive into anyway.
I think you bring up a good point about the patch limitation. And I d love it if the developer actually revised that system. It’s good that we can use the AUv3 internal preset system, however it’s a pain when those presets aren’t available to other hosts. So I mostly d save my presets internally in a synth (or whatever app) when it’s possible to do so.
Yes, the preset system really is very poorly implemented. However, yes, it does also sound great, so I wouldn't let the preset system limitations stop anybody buying it.
There’s a lot of fun to be had with it. I pretty much spent the first 5 days on making the info bits of the video. The other two days was just me making music with it. Really love the sound of this thing. 😅
@jakoB_haQ your video shows some real thought and analysis. So much more than the typical knee jerk reaction to price or a quick evaluation of features at a glance. You are correct that devs need to do a better job if they want users to take their apps seriously. Well done! 😎👍🏼
Yep, it sounds good. Just like many other synths on the AppStore. 😉
If you have avoided this app due to the (relatively) high cost, it is on a Black Friday sale for 50% off.
I was definitely considering it but went with Shaper instead. Did you get it? How is it?
I did not get it. I already have several subtractive / virtual analog synths and still need to spend more time with them before adding another. I think the free Primer 2 synth is a great option with a terrific design / layout.
Instead, I purchased GSi's Model D6 Clav which is also on sale and a terrific bargain at $15 USD.
Primer 2 is a great synth! Big fan of their modeled instruments as well. Their organs are the best we have on iOS.
I agree. I have all 3 GSi organs and think they are among the best bargains at $15 USD. They sound incredible at less than 10 MB in size. I do not expect to upgrade to the new VB3-II because VB3m is good enough for my needs.
I downloaded VB3-II because it’s free to test (even as an AU) and it comes with a ton more presets. That said it also includes the presets from the original and when I compared them side by side it does sound slightly different but not necessarily better. And if it is, it’s only by a small amount. There’s definitely something different though. I guess they changed the engine some.
Personally, it’s not worth the $99 upgrade for me, even with the extra features and better UI. At $30 I could see myself doing it one day but unless you play professionally you’re fine with the first one.
I do agree with you though. The bundle deal is a steal for what you get. They sound absolutely fantastic. I can’t go back to any of my sampled tonewheels after using VB3. HaNon and Galileo just can’t compete.
