AUV3 for stereo width reduction?

edited September 2022 in General App Discussion

I’m searching for an AUV3 effect which allows to reduce stereo width.

For example AUM’s mid side node allows a bit to do that.

Some delays like Waves one in Cubasis has ping pong setting which bounces a bit too far away on stereo field sides.

But I like how it sounds in some cases, even if know some other delays have depth setting for this. I wish to make the effect more narrow.

Wider from Polyverse for example only allows to make things sound… wider!!

FX Pack 1 in cubasis (iap) has a stereo width plug-in that lets you increase and reduce the stereo width.

  • @prtr_jan @timforsyth thanks to both of you, perfect!!

  • Isn't the Mid/Side node in AUM doing exactly what you need?

I want this AUV3 alternative in other hosts like Cubasis. When using AUM Mid/Side is perfect :)

  • always remember there is truely only 2 components to our modern day "stereo"

    1. Mono which translates to "well connected"

2 and everything that is not mono. Which some call it the stereo info or side info if working with a true m/s cardiod mic pattern. But really this is just all the junk that is out of phase with eveything else that is "mono or well connected"

I would love to just say one sentence to seriosly open your mind to the biggest aha moment youve ever had but i feel like I would be robbing people of the euphoric high I had after years of a mentor passingly saying the above to me over years of session work. He had a Neve console that did not have pan pots ( just basically 2 button switches labeled L for left and R for right. You could push one button or both! ;) One day I was mixing an amazing blues rock band from chicago and during the session at night had this realization of what I was being told and Had this almost trip like experience for what seemed like an hour just connecting all the dots youve always had missing when it comes to modern music reproduction.

haha but to answer your question above just lower the level of the "side info" or as in AUMs dev just said above.

One thing to note even with all the waves m/s waves plugins there is only one that truely decouples the center image not to be confused with mono. And I believe 4 pockets sideband is doing the same thing under the hood which is funny because it seems all ios devs besides @j_liljedahl have have opted to not give to the masses access to seriously the only mixing tool needed to make a good record. If you want to destroy your mix or any component within using that mushroom wider thingy will do just that.

  • Another that acts like a stereo width control is the Wet Pan knob in FabFilter C-2

  • I'm in a desperate pickle with Stereo issues too on a Synthwave track I wrote in GarageBand (iOS).
The mix achieves the feat of sounding both muddy and disorienting, and to top it off I've got a supersaw clashing with a saw lead resulting in 'resonant squelch' on the attack :-(

I'd love to get it into Cubasis but I have too many GB native instruments to make it worth the effort.
So I've been looking at videos today to try to untangle the mess I've made.

I'd recommend you also look at:

I'm probably gonna go for Stereo Width Control to start with as it looks a bit simpler (and comes with a 'mono' button for lazy mixers like me).

  • I cant blame you for not reading my rather long winded post.

But based on the principles just use the wet/dry knob and think of it as a fader for your stereo delays. So the more you bring it down to the dry side the less stereo content you have/the more it will be precieved as mono.

Remember stereo widening doesnt magically just create more information nothing. Its just a basic see saw- with mono kids on the left and stereo bastard children on the right of the fulcrum. The louder the "stereo content" the wider your mix will be precieved.

    Cheers

Enjoyed your earlier post and envy your trip-like experience!

This vid by Dan Worrall is also worth a watch

  • That said, when playing solo instruments would you agree that sometimes stereo widening sounds good?

Yeah it’s more about sound shaping at a song level than pure mixing. No pure rules here IMO, I will always tweak things to make them sounds good to me. This is what does a cooker when he’s cooking isn’t it? :D

This Waves Delay have a Lofi setting which sounds quite good in the specific context but no stereo width setting like Dubstation 2. I ended lowering Waves delay automated dry wet values and using a bit of Jax stereo tool width reduction :)

BTW internal channel strip compressor and saturation gives surprisingly good results on bass!! Good presence.

  • I went ahead and bought the 'Stereo Width Tool' and it is a good option for any Garageband tracks. Most of my issue was an epic saw lead with big reverb and a ping pong delay. Sounded great by itself but destroyed everything in its sonic wake when combined with everything else.

Cheers @Gavinski you are a smart man Its almost comical to whatch a youtube vid from certain people after seeing one of your full lengths. Very rare

@Janosax I %100 percent agree I love that you say this no rules absolutely. Just got check all of the new findings in mono to make sure the elevator or club speaker doesnt throw out all that coolness when it goes out to the public!

    Cheers

Sorry to dig into an almost 2 year old thread. I wanted to solve the same problem as the OP (too wide pingpong delay) and I found the "SimpleStereoWidening" AUv3 app for only $1. Easy to use (one knob) and the result is as expected.
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/simplestereowidening/id1501592457
EDIT: I found user presets don't work in Loopy Pro and contacted dev. Fortunately, the state saving works as it should.

  • As the thread has been zombies… I bought Quantovox True Pan for this kind of purpose (specifically reducing QVox to mono after processing a mono source as the pitched voices are hard-panned). This was before Mid-Side Contnuum was released. And I’ve been reminded I can complete a bundle for a quid 😂

  • ... and I'm still using the 'Stereo Width Control' plug-in that younger me referenced above.
You can also use it to quickly isolate frequency bands to diagnose issues with 'mud'.
