Looking to see if a "WalkAbout" app already exists that has specific and fairly simple functionality
I was recently traveling and wanted to share audio from locations easily.
I can already achieve what I wanted using several apps but I wanted just one app that does this one sort of thing well and with ease.
I’ll describe a fictional app that does what I want it to. I’m calling the fictional app “WalkAbout”
With Walkabout you launch the recording app. You set either the input level you want manually or you can select ALC. You can also turn on a limiter and/or low cut filter if you want.
You put the app in record-pause and walk around somewhere with lots of ambient audio variation like Mexico City. You can live monitor the app input via wired or Bluetooth headphones. You can use the iPhone's mic or an external mic connected to the iPhone.
You record while walking around recording interesting ambient sound then put the app back into record-pause. When you hear more interesting ambient sound you take it off record-pause to continue the recording.
Other recording apps I tried introduce a click or pop where you paused the recording. Not so with the fictional Walkabout app. Seamless between recording sections where you hit rec/pause.
While you are recording with Walkabout you can change the recording level manually on-the-fly if you want.
When you are finished there’s a short fade available to be automatically added to the beginning and end of your session recording if you want.
At this point you can save or export the recording OR you can add a photo from your photos gallery and add a title to the image “Mexico Bellas Artes on Sunday” and then export/share in video format for easy sharing on social media. You can also export your audio composition as an audio file only, or export into another app.
It would also be nice if you could do very basic editing of the completed Walkabout session to cut out unwanted parts with a short cross fade added where you chopped out unwanted sections.
Most of the recording apps I have introduced a click or pop when I engaged recording from record-pause.
None of them did ALC, but some had a limiter.
I would have to export out the recording to another app to cut anything out in most cases.
Then I’d have to import the audio into a video/graphics app to add an image and title, then export the video for social media sharing.
It'd be nice if you could import an audio composition into "WalkAbout" if you just want to add an image/title and export out with in/out fades in video format for easy social media sharing.
It would be nice if you could do these Walkabout recording compositions all in one easy app for easy social media sharing instead of having to use 2-4 different apps to edit out record-pause pops, add in/out fade, basic edit out parts, use ALC and limiter while recording, adjust input level on the fly, add an image and/or title to the finished composition then export in video format for easy social media sharing or output the finished recording by itself.

This is exactly what I wanted to do recently. I wanted to plug in my Sennheiser ambisonic headphones and take a walk around a specific area of Mexico City. I wanted to have my iPhone in rec/pause. When I'd hear something interesting in the park, I take it off rec/pause and record a few seconds before putting it back into rec/pause. Walk some more and find the next interesting area for sound and take it off rec/pause for a few seconds.
I wanted to continue this until I had a couple minutes worth of interesting audio that represented the best parts of my walk without having to cut out all the boring parts and the click/pops recorded when engaging rec/pause in an editing program. I wanted to basically edit my composition on-the-fly while walking around.
Can't do the rec/pause in Fieldscaper, but it does have the limiter and I think ALC.
Most of the apps dedicated to recording that would allow me to do rec/pause for one one composition... introduced a click/pop at the points where I'd put the recording in/out of rec/pause that would have to be edited out. One of the recording apps did NOT introduce this click/pop so I know it's possible.
The other big problem is that ALL of the social media sites only let you share text, photos, or videos. You can't really share audio. You can use a service like Soundcloud then share that, but you have a pay for a subscription.
What I wanted to do when my walking sound composition was finished, is just add a photo I took from the walk to the audio. Add a title maybe... then export as a video file so that I could easily share on twitter, instagram, facebook, tiktok, email, etc.
Yes, I can do a recording in one app. Then maybe edit that recording in that app or another app. Then, I can import that audio file into an app like Lumafusion and import a photo, then stretch the photo so that it's 2 minutes long, then design a title for the piece to overlay, then export a still image video with audio so that I can easily share. But that's using 2-3 apps and more importing/exporting and more editing work.
It just seems like there ought to be one app that does all this easily and I think it would be popular with those who want to share creative audio on social media. It could be something like that already exists. If it does, I haven't found it yet.

I was just about to post about a very simple app that does click-free record pausing at least... It's called Quick Record. I went to double check on it only to discover it ceased being available from Feb 2022. I still use it, not for the click freeness reason though.
So really this is a pointless reply I suppose... I find a simple audio recorder app to be essential, but there very few that have a good set of features. This app had some but lacked others.
The app sounds like a good idea, so I hope someone else has something more helpful to add than this!
I’d be surprised if something like what I’ve described doesn’t already exist, but I have not found it.
One app does almost all of this… at least the basic parts. It allows for rec/pause for long compositions. You can trim the segments. No click/pop when rec/pause used between segments. You can add photo/photos from the photos app or take stills inside the app, add effects and titles. Then export as video format for easy social media sharing.
The free Apple app called Clips does all this.
No fade in/out. No limiter or ALC but it’s very close to what I described in the original post.
How do you get Clips to record just the audio?
I started by adding a still photo. After that it just records the audio with the still as the visual instead of video.
I discovered that by accident because I was testing to see if it would allow me to first add an image.
In case you want to create your audio composition in another app and just use Clips to add a photo/photos and export as video for sharing… Clips doesn’t appear to let you import external audio other than what’s in iTunes. But, I just confirmed that I can export an audio file out of AudioShare into Clips
Ferrite by Wooji Juice Ltd is probably up to the job, I just tried the glitch free record pause sequence.
It shows markers at the timeline as pause indicators and you can add graphics to the track.
(sorry, never used that feature myself)
It can do hours of tracking, apply automation, AU fx and is multitrack.
A bit on the expensive side, but well worth if one needs it‘s functionality.
That was the only one I tried that didn’t have the glitch at rec/pause. Didn’t know you could add graphics but it doesn’t allow export to video format for easy sharing does it?
Will take another at it. I only have the free version though.
edit: just checked and it does have video format export in the paid version. If I end up doing these regularly, it might be worth upgrading. Always liked ferrite
That’s a really useful tip. I’ve had Clips for ages and so far not found a huge use for it: this might change that!
You may check the upgrade features for details. Here‘s 1 topic I copied
Export to video was also mentioned somewhere.
Yes, I’ve just gone through the user guide. Looks like it does everything I described but only in the paid version. I can add cover art in the free version but video format export requires the upgrade at $30.
I’m going to play with the free clips first. If I decide to make these “walkabouts” regularly, I think I might upgrade ferrite for much more control.
Thx for reminding me to take a closer look at ferrite!
You‘re welcome
Tbh Ferrite is the only multitrack audio editor in IOS that I had at least some success with, even though it neglects a couple of things due to it‘s strong podcast focus.
You have to fill the tools palette with functions yourself, initially it‘s empty, so it looks quite humble. Unusual approach, but this way no unneeded functions float around.
It has some smart editing features and good tactile response imho.
