Ir’s
So I would like to try my luck at using ir’s so I’m new to this so do I just download them directly to my iPad and then load them or what ? Am I on the righttrack
Comments
Yes. Rhino and THU have built-in IR loaders, so you can share a file to them, then use it. Alternatively, Thafknar is a useful AUv3 plug-in. You can share a zip to it, then select a file from the built-in menus. So you can use Thafknar with apps that don't support loading IRs. Just remember to turn off the internal speaker model.
I recommend that you search around here for IR. There's a very long thread covering many details and giving specific suggestions. If searching for IR is difficult, try Thafknar; it's pretty distinctive.
Edit: Maybe the IR discussion was in the big holy grail discussion.
@jdolecek49 : be aware that most free cabinet IRs are not of the caliber of something like OwnHammer IRs
Do the ir’s have to be iOS specific or are all the ir’s universal??
+1 for Ownhammer. The (r)Evolution bundle is probably all one can ever need. Seacowcabs used to have plenty of excellent free IR on their website. Don't know if these are still available.
I answered that question in the message I sent you yesterday. An IR is a very small wav file hence universal. But as @espiegel123 mentioned the quality of free IR is not always on par with commercial ones. Your best bet is Ownhammer. You can also check on the Celestion website, they have a few decent free IR. But honestly, Ownhammer is a very good investment that will last you for years to come.
They're just wav files as long as the reverb tail, so they're not system-specific. You do need the same sampling rate as you're using, 44.1, 48 kHz, or whatever. Most downloads include multiple forms, and you can filter out the ones you don't need. Essentially they're the time response to a sound impulse in the space, like a gunshot or loud clap. Now, speaker cab IRs are a bit special, because they try to represent how the speaker and cab affect the sound right at the speaker, with no room dynamics (tricky). This discussion can get very technical, but you can just follow your ears.
I was on ownhammers website and they offer different formats like for factual, line6 ect
And to answer you question, to my knowledge, Ownhammer are not in the app store. You need to purchase directly from them on their website.
Damn these ir’s are expensive, like cost more than the amps sims themselves
I understand your concern, but think of it this way, how much would it cost you to buy or even rent all the different cabs included in one Ownhammer bundle and all the different expensive mics and preamps used to capture them ? Just make the calculation and you'll see that a Ownhammer bundle, even expensive compared to an amp sim, is a hell of a good value. they do sound very good and can make a huge difference in your quest for the guitar tone you're after.
True…I just had $20 to my name lol I’m just bitching lol
Man, you sure are high-maintenance jdolecek. We’re all (most, at least) happy to help, but gosh you need a lotta hand-holding, eh?
I hope talking down to me makes you feel so much better, guess you needed something because you obviously have inadequacies by your lack of size
Nembrini has an app called IRloader, rhino can load ir’s there’s a few others too. Can make a guitar or other things sound a lot better.
You can download them free or paid, just like samples, or loops.
They are basically audio files, but of an impulse response not a particular sound.
Here’s a Wikipedia excerpt…
“ impulse responses enable the acoustic characteristics of a location, such as a concert hall, to be captured. Various packages are available containing impulse responses from specific locations, ranging from small rooms to large concert halls. These impulse responses can then be utilized in convolution reverb applications to enable the acoustic characteristics of a particular location to be applied to target audio”
Ok ok, you 2. Lol. I’m no moderator but I can understand both sides. Yes it’s a good idea to do some research or try it yourself or search the forum, or YouTube, etc.. to start, However I never want to hinder people asking questions.
Black Friday will be here before we know it and I believe the Ownhammer IRs are usually discounted then, at least that’s when I bought mine. Unless you are super desperate to get them then no harm in waiting for a sale.
Happy to have @jdolecek49 ask the supposedly dumb questions that I have been meaning to ask but have dreaded the fearsome OatPhipps smackdown! lol And now I get the benefit of seeing the results!
Here's my dumb question: I really do not care at all about replicating famous guitar tones. My ideal guitar is, like, the objectively wrong opening chords of "Street Fighting Man" or the indistinct chiming of "Star Power."
Will I really be blown away by dedicated impulse responses? Or is this like how the proper wineglass is necessary to truly enjoy a vintage Saint-Émilion? (When all I really want to do is get a little buzzed and finish this pizza.)
Imo, yes. A good IR will generally help anytime you want a non-DI guitar sound. DI can be good and is its own sound. Even trash-guitar through an amp with a speaker has a certain something that the right IR gets you closer to. It removes fizz and adds a wee bit of "air" for the lack of a better term.
Well the internet is totally full with information about IR's. And I think when you ask a question you have to do some investigation yourself first. And you have to give more info in a question, and report what you do with the answer. And when someone is saying something, be IMHO a bit polite, have some self awareness, instead of bitching.
But I am here to help, you can audition some IR's until you find a nice one, and set it and forget it. See the IR as a guitar speaker (or cabinet+speaker) you buy in the store. You don't switch real cabinets whole day long.
Check this drop box link in the message here under, and search for the TV Mix 2 IR file. Maybe that is all you need. That one is the only one I use, and I have a lot of Ownhamer and even better, York Audio IR's.

Thanks, @raabje
Appreciated very much.
okay, you are welcome! If you want to go down in the rabbit hole, there are websites with links to free IR's, for example
https://bedroomproducersblog.com/2010/10/01/free-sample-shootout-6-best-free-guitar-cabinet-impulse-responses/
https://producelikeapro.com/blog/best-guitar-impulse-responses/
etc. etc.
And technically an IR is the capture of a test signal thru a cabinet, speaker and a microphone in the room. So you have a lot of parameters. That is the trouble with IR's you buy, you get so much stuff, all almost the same. Different microphone, different angle, distance, different mix of microphones, different pre amp and power amp settings, different master mix, etc.
Some IR's are really dry, just the speaker (Celestion IR's are (in)famous for this), others give a bit of room capture too, or you hear more wood from the cabinet.
And if that is not enough, in IR loaders you can mix different IR's, left, right, with lots of settings.
You don't want to go there, believe me. IMHO you get a better tone with practicing some new scales up and down than messing with IR's on such a deep level.
I wasn’t talking down, I was talking right at you. Take a good ribbing why don’t ya
If you sign up for JST News letter they send you a small pack of nice ir’s.
https://joeysturgistones.com/pages/subscribe-to-jst-impulse-response-pack-updates
I don’t know how they compare to Own hammer but they are to promote they ir pack for sale so they must be of decent quality.
Use a burner email.
Celestion V30 one I like to use.

When I decided to try Ownhammer IRs, rather than pop for the whole Revolution bundle, I picked one single cabinet that sort of matched my most used amp sim. I think I spent $8.00. One cabinet was fine for me. It gave me that little bit more punch and realism I was looking for.
Later, when there was a really good sale I picked up the whole Revolution bundle. Yup, the original I purchased was in there, so that original $8.00 spend wasn't necessary, but it allowed me to decide whether IR's were worth it at a lower entry point.
BYOD Lets your load your custom Irs
Would somebody who own Ownhammer ir’s be willing to compare with those ir’s I mentioned above ?
Well, well.. Thanks for sharing that.. 👍
