JWM - Screw Yourself (EDM Rock)
So after I produced "A New Hope Dawns" which was created after a bad argument with a friend who blocked me, I felt better. Well last week, she unblocked me, and I thought things would be okay. Big mistake! She didn't want me writing longer messages to her even though she also wrote longer messages to me, fine. I didn't do that. She didn't want to hear about my life, even though she told me a lot about hers, okay fine. But the moment I asked for a ride from the car repair shop to home, instantly reblocked. I became tired of the mindgames and emotional manipulation and went completely "no contact" with her.
Anyways, this song is about her.
Is writing this song petty? Yes, but I honestly don't give a shit. 🤣 She can screw herself.
(Yeah, and I admit I'm pretty rusty when it comes to mixing vocals in an EDM production let alone with singing and pronouncing words and it shows. 🫣 Some of the lyrics are barely intelligible.)
Well, cheers and enjoy. Yeah, the AudioBus forum, basically music therapy. 😂

YEAH DUDE!!! Give me more of this. This makes my head spin. Fuck that ambient shit.
Women... can't live with 'em... can't live without 'em. Been there, done that.
As Brando said... If you wanna be cool, ya gotta wail.
I wanna hear your WAIL on your piano!
Wow!! Great track! I second the “Give me more of this”!
And yeah, relationships…
LOL! 🤣 I do love my Ambient shit, but right now I'm entering my next EDM phase of musical creation. It took a toxic friend to bring out my bad side as well as my EDM muse. 😅 But one thing I'm thankful for regarding my Ambient phase earlier this year is that I've learned a lot of new production techniques I didn't know before that can be easily applied to EDM, including using a Shimmer reverb on the lead to thicken it up.
Same can definitely be said about a lot of folks really, regardless of who they are or what gender they identify as. 🙂 Although none of the other folks I've eventually cut out of my life have done nearly as much shit to me as this person in question. She faked being nice for an entire year , to the point I've opened up to her about many personal things and vice versa.
THEN, little by little, she started picking apart everything about my likes, my character, my core values, and just everything, but I never blocked her, because I was in disbelief that this version of her was the "real version" of her. Like some form of stockholm syndrome or something. Don't know how to explain it really.
Hell yeah! Brando ain't wrong about that, although he certainly did have a very bad temper! Me, I get out my frustrations through music. Like with another friend who was a complete billy no mates crybaby that I made an Ambient diss track about. 🤣 More about him here...

(The Ambient track is above, but the comment I linked to explains the whole backstory.)

Wish granted. Me playing a pretty popuar Disney tune. 😎
Thanks mate. Also thanks @Paulieworld ! I respect the hell out of you both.
Right?! Oof, at this point, I'm just done trying. I'm fine being on my own really and having other friends and my family in my life.
Thanks for posting 'Bruno'. I enjoyed that very much. It sounded like you were playing live in a small club. I miss those days.
I don't much care for what Disney has recently become, but I have always had a deep respect for their creative people.
Relationships... what can you say? All of mine failed until I was about 45 and met 'the one'. It just happened. I will say a prayer that you find 'the one'. In the meantime, surround yourself with family and friends, and keep makin' music!
One last thing... have you ever considered just breaking all the rules and develop your own genre? I still vividly remember the first time I heard Jimi Hendix and Jaco Pastorius. They broke the rules!
Wow. If I had your skills in EDM I’d be seriously challenged by the choice between doing it or Dark Ambient. Luckily, of course, I don’t have those skills…
Aside from the track (witch i don't like, haha. It's personal taste, and nothing to do with your production skills), if someone is sucking your life-force, break with it, unless your love for that person is larger than the sacrifice.
A relationship with a person is 2-way, not one-way...
Rock on dude! Sounds like you rightfully rid yourself of some soul-sucking bullshit. Good for you!
Same here. Disney has become a monstrous corporation, but they do employ some of the best creatives out there.
Thanks mate. That means a lot. To be honest, she wasn't a girlfriend but rather a super close friend, like a sibling. Or so I thought. I've tried dating before, and the folks I dated were definitely not "the one". But, if you were able to find someone at 45, that means I have 7 years to catch up to you mate.
I've done a lot of genre mixing, whether rock and EDM, or country and EDM (long before Avicii made "Wake Me Up", although Avicii's song is far better than my "Your Wicked Lies" 🤣), etc. I've tried 12-tone EDM about...10 years ago, and it sucked. But I've yet to try atonal EDM.
Ah, those take time to develop. Producing Ambient is technically easier but requires more imagination. Producing EDM is technically more challenging and requires a modicum of basic music theory knowledge (or Scaler 2 lol) and, if writing lyrics, a basic grasp on how to write killer hooks to suck a listener into the song. During my Ambient stint, I've gained many more production techniques that can be easily transferred to EDM. Such as using Bleass Shimmer on the Trance lead. I know another Ambient stint will happen soon...especially once j_liljedahl releases the next beta for AUM which he publicly stated will have automation and audio tracks! 😳
Go screw yourself. 😉 LOL! Joking! Had to get my song title in this reply somewhere, lol, but I get it mate. EDM is not to everyone's taste, much like long Ambient pieces aren't to everyone's taste.
Cheers mate.
Exactly! And my love for this friend, who was more like a sibling, was larger than the sacrifice for the longest time until I pulled back to see the forest for the trees.
Yes I did. She'd pick on everything that I'd do, even down to me often spelling words the European way ("colour" instead of "color"), down to me "arriving to work too early" (even though the place I play at is a restaurant, and I like the food and drink there). Just picked on me for every random-ass little thing.
(And the reason I spell words the European way often is due to the fact I have many European friends online. I mean fuckin hell, she said, "You're American. Spell your words the normal way" (whatever the fuck that means)).
Hi jwm,
This is totally different from what I expected from you.
Maybe a bit of big exhale and release of toxic elements, is what I am getting from this music, especially coming from you.
Great to hear this from you, and from your system.
Warm
I enjoyed your previous EDM posts before, but this tops them all. You should be angry more often 😂.
Seriously, good work on this. I’m particularly impressed by your vocals.
Nice track, bad friend…. What was this done in? gadget?
Much love and peace to you and yours, my friend. Now that I'm back in my EDM bag, maybe we can do a collaboration. I'll write the song and produce it, and if you'd be so kind as to provide the vocal and guitar stems. We'll talk logistics later in private messages. Of course the song I'm writing for you to sing will be a love song, not a "stick it to a bad friend" song. 🤣
LOL! Right? 🤣 Then again, I don't wanna have a stroke from being angry all the time. (I'm kidding of course.)
Thank you so much mate. Believe it or not, I didn't sing this time. I'm very rusty when it comes to singing, so I spoke the words into Cubasis 3. The reason I did this was to convey the emotion rather than the correct pitch. Then I used that Waves Autotune effect in conjunction with MIDI input to tune them to perfection, with vibrato turned on so it wasn't a flat sound.
Thanks mate. The bulk of everything was done in Nanostudio 2. Most of the drums you hear are from Sounds of KSHMR Vol 4, most of them being acoustic drums (including the kickdrum) rather than using the traditional EDM samples you usually hear. I did use the "Like a G6" clap from Sounds of KSHMR Vol 3 to lay under the acoustic snare, and one of the closed hihat samples from Sounds of KSHMR Vol 3 to drive the sidechain compression.
The vocals were recorded in Cubasis 3. As I mentioned, I spoke them in rather than sang them so I could better convey the emotion rather than the correct pitch. I fixed up the pitch with that Waves Autotune plugin in conjunction with MIDI input, and I had vibrato on so the vocals didn't sound so flat.
I thought there was a bit of auto tuning involved and the results are impressive. I have the Waves plug in but I’ve never been able to get anything like what you’ve done. Very cool 😎.
I think you're talented in both genre. But something tells me that you have a very strong instinct for EDM and that you "feel" it more than you "think" it. I might be wrong but this is the impression I have left from listening to your work in both genre. IMO, You should do more EDM and keep on developing your own identity. I am not discarding your dark ambient work at all. But something tells me that EDM is really made for you.
About relation, just stay yourself, cherish each day, take care of friends and family and keep on making the music you love. "True love will find you in the end".
Makes me wonder if there is a fruitful spot for you on the Venn diagram between EDM and Ambient. Sort of some Oblique Strategy thinking required: “What Dance is Ambient?” “Dance like no one is listening”
Does the first chorus really say 'Screw yourself you aging old doll'? 😂
I agree with Jan - although this is not actually the kind of music I like listening to, I think you are good at it. That's not surprising though as it seems you a) studied electronic music making techniques b) have been making this kind of music for a very long time
Who knows what your ambient stuff will sound like after a few more years of experimenting.
And yes, good riddance to bad rubbish. Obviously we only know one side of the story but she sounds like quite a nasty piece of work. I have 'dropped' several friends over the past two or three years. Life's too short to waste hanging around with people who don't appreciate you, aren't good for you, or simply aren't really your cup of tea 😂. Ditch'em and move on 👍
Shit, looks like SoundCloud is down for the time being. That sucks. Anyways, time to reply...
Aww thanks mate. Yeah, it takes practice to get good at controlling an autotuner. The fact I spoke my words instead of singing them and got such great results speaks volumes of how powerful this Waves Autotune in Cubasis 3 is!
You're not wrong at all. I've only recently got into Ambient, whereas I've been producing EDM since I was 18. My first halfway decent song was "Mysterious Girl"...
https://www.dropbox.com/s/yr3hwcc3429qjez/JWM - Mysterious Girl [Original Radio Mix].mp3?dl=0
I didn't know anything about singing back then, so the vocals are a bit out of tune and slightly painful to listen to, but the lyrics and music are far better than I remembered, and the mixing is well done for an advance amateur. 🫢 I will be remaking this track, hopefully in collaboration with my mate @ReneAsologuitar .
Thanks mate. That means a lot to me.
"What Dance is Ambient?" When you asked that, I immediately thought about Dream Trance.
Whereas a lot of modern Trance is "hands up/in your face", Robert Miles made some of the best Trance. Also this following track is a fucking god-tier masterpiece...
And yes, both of these tracks make me misty-eyed.
Rather it says "Screw Yourself, you think you know it all". 🤣 Like I said, I'm a bit rusty at pronouncing my words for recording as well as mixing down vocals in a track, so not everything comes off with clarity.
You're not wrong mate. Been making EDM long before it was called EDM, long before the dawn of the first iPhone let alone first iPad.
Probably much better than now, lol. It takes loads of time and practice to get good, but I have loads of time and patience to practice since music is my life.
Well I wasn't entirely fair to her either during our friendship and kept a couple secrets from her. When I finally felt comfortable enough to tell her said secrets, instead of "I understand why you kept those from me, but you can tell me anything Jim" she pointed fingers and made me feel like shit for not being honest with her in the first place.
Amen my friend. Thanks mate.
