"Monet's Lunch", StaffPad orchestration on a Linearlineman composition

Recently, @LinearLineman posted his track "Monet's Lunch" which I believe was a reworked version of an older track. I really enjoy its quality which reminded me a lot of Debussy.
Since I just started working on orchestration using staffpad I asked him if he would let me try to create some orchestration around his beautiful piano improvisation and he kindly accepted.
I am not familiar with atonality and did what I could. I learned a lot on the way.
I hope some of you will enjoy it and as usual, critical feedback is always welcome to help growing.

  • You did a great job on this one. Just the right amount of atonality, IMO. It would be interesting to hear something like this without the piano.

  • Hi JanKun,
I cannot imagine a recording like this without the piano.
Maybe LinearLineman has a more original perspective.
I trust his ingenuity, and will probably go with his insight.
I love this record, very melodic, highly "jazz" musicality, and extremely enjoyable.

@jankun DM’ed me a song he created and orchestrated that really knocked me off the rails of conventional music. I hope he puts that up… I heard it once and thought “This guys the real deal.”
An innovator when you think everything has been done. Painting outside the lines is the key to expanding the realm of possibility. There may not initially be a mass audience because the sounds are challenging but there would be a devoted audience that is in search of an innovator.

The orchestration added here was perfect for the initial recording and I hope to hear more collabs in the future from this pairing of unique musical minds.

Glad you enjoyed it, Mike ! The arrangement is built around the piano, I am not sure it would stand well alone on its own feet.

Thank you for listening and for your kind words, Rene! It is incredibly to see how you take the time to listen to all the creations on this forum and comment each time. You're amazing!

  • Great work guys. I cannot imagine it without the piano though. That’s the rug that ties the room together.

Also, is it really atonal? It sounds like it’s in Eb to me.

When I started the track, I tried to quickly analyse the harmony but miserably failed. to me the tonality seems to constantly shift, so I can hardly hear it. Deeper analyse is necessary. I'll check if Eb is a good candidate, thank you for the hint. Maybe it is not clearly atonal but a track with several modulations. I am no harmony expert. One thing for sure, because my lack of understanding of the harmony, The score is full of accidentals. But it didn't stop me from adding the few ideas I had in mind.

Hoping for more collaboration with @LinearLineman and you too @McD !
I think I know the track you're mentioning. I am really proud of that track, so I'll work on the mix and do another take for the vocals and will post it soon.
I still consider myself as an apprentice craftsman more than an innovator. But your kind words mean a lot to me. Thank you.

I agree with you, the track cannot stand without the piano which is the basement and walls and the roof of the building. I only see my orchestration as curtains on the windows 😉

  • @JanKun, I’ll send you the project for Pavane. I think you’ll do something very good with it.

  • Lovely to see so much collaboration happening at the moment… if only the rest of the world was so harmonious 🤔

We are all on the same boat. Better to hold hands and watch each other's back during the storm !

  • Beautiful, I think the orchestration really adds a lot to the already great piano. The vibe is definitely enhanced considerably.

Thank you for listening and commenting, Lou 😉. I posted an orchestration for another piece called 'Metropolis'. When you have the time, your feedback is always appreciated.
