Time After Time (with added vocals by McD)
Here's a remixed version of Time After Time with vocals.
A friend, @McD, very kindly added the vocals to this beautiful song, which was very brave of him, as he hasn't sung in public for 5 years due to throat surgery. I do believe he has fully recovered - sounds great!
Comments
Oh @McD has sung beautifully!
I'm so glad to hear a male only rendition of this classic track.
When you say 'remixed', did you originally release this as a rougher mixed instrumental?
Nice!!!! Great rendition!!
He released it as an instrumental accompaniment and I discovered it was a good key for me.
So, I pulled his SoundCloud version into Koala and sang along using the iPhone mic.
i sent over that terrible mix and was encouraged to make a separate vocal only stem. So, I got out a good mic and sent a
Vocal only track.
The @pbelgium went into a long period of mastering mixes he would forward and finally settled on this version.
Nice , smile, delicate!
Damn @McD, is that you? When someone is a disembodied friend we imagine what they sound like…. I never imagined this and it’s great. Good guitarism, too. What does Wifey think? I hope she’s proud.
you two did a great job !
It is really nice to hear your voice @McD !
Thanks... Vocal Nodes can happen after surgeries and I had one that basically limited my range to about an octave knocking off all notes above C4 to F4. I could substitute those notes with a really odd sounding falsetto but slowly since 2015 I have seen the node reduce and just let me sing. The timbre is still affected but this particular key allowed me to consider recording a version I'd feel comfortable sharing. The worst node impact is when a specific note stutters and I used to do an open mic with a poor guy that had a serious node and he'd just hit those "goat throat" notes and carry on. I could never do that. I'll never have the voice I had on my 30's but what I have seems to be that voice with an added layer of white noise which most people seems to prefer in a pop voice like Rod Stewart, etc. My 30's voice as without the noise and more like a John Denver tone which makes most wretch due to the saccharine quality.
The most important message is just to embrace the sounds that emerge because it's heard work to change it... so just sing like a bird without overthinking it. The act of doing it is the real pleasure.
Listening to this track over and over I can only hear what might make it more interesting. That process of taking notes never seems to end.
I definitely hope to hear you sing more from now on. Life brought you limitations, but these limitations can become a strength. Reconnect with your voice and more importantly, take pleasure when singing. Please consider making more like this. We all have a voice and even though we have all this technology, those synths and instruments available, I still believe our voice is our best tool to convey emotions.
Well done, boys. Sounds great over here - nice to hear you on a new/old instrument @McD 😁👍
I found @pbelgium ’s original piece equally inspiring and hope to produce something in a while but this is beautiful… well done @McD , lovely singing and brave of you to go for it!
Thanks @pbelgium for the this and your other great tunes.
I can’t recommend @pbelgium highly enough for making a project work. He didn’t have any experience mixing a vocal and he just kept doing versions and each one was so much better. Obviously, he labors over his contribution to lay down a solid guitar arrangement. It inspired me to sing and add that extra layer.
I wish I had labored over my part and nailed it. His mix taught me how to pan, EQ and carefully add reverb to make it fell like you are in the room and not trying to just add glossy texture but make it sound real. There’s another guitar project out there crying for someone to lay down the melody. “Natural Woman” as I recall… men sing “ man sure of a woman” to pull it off.
Always loved the song and your rendition is simply beautiful, thank you both for sharing.
Thanks. The guitar playing is inspiring and difficult… lots of tricky pull offs or hammer ons. I’m glad the final mix has all that guitar goodness mix with a cool tune. @pbelgium and I were excited at how tight the rhythm came together at the mix stage.
Good job both of you.
I wasn't expecting this.
What a pleasant surprise!
@McD your voice sounds great and compliments @pbelgium excellent guitar playing.
I'm going to give it another listen before I get to work.
So glad it’s not just a close copy of the original. Nice job guys!
Thanks.
I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment.
I’m glad you like it because you post more songs than anybody here so your input carries extra weight. Your projects have fewer mistakes and a lot more instruments so I can see how much effort you put in.
Thanks to all who listened. And thanks again to @McD for doing this - you should sing on all my tracks, I get more listens.
Natural Woman can be found here if anyone wants to have a go.
Just adding my compliments to both of you. I've enjoyed the guitar playing before but maybe hadn't commented. It's just that typing on the ipad is too cumbersome for me. I've tried just emojis but they seem too glib. @McD's vocalizing very expressive.
Thanks… the quality of the guitar accompaniment really pushed me to add a vocal and make the song obvious. The first time I heard it I heard another song and had to be corrected and pointed to a video that was the basis for the arrangement. That video also inspired me to take a shot at singing again after a long break.
Nice to hear you, McD
Thanks. It was in the perfect key to avoid the notes where I got ‘nuthin.
I thought of you when I made the decision to do a vocal. It’s pretty frustrating to have this instrument that is just so finicky.
Most instruments just require a specific “fingering” and you get a note but the voice is so much more intuitive and prone to error. Still, I do like to hear a lot of voices just to find one that’s totally unique Cassandra.
Sounds really nice guys! Great job on the vocal track @McD, and @pbelgium, the guitar!
Thanks Ed. @pbelgium sent me several mixes and each one was better than the last. He even fixed one of my timing
Errors when I didn’t come in with the guitar after a pause. I’m really glad he did but it took some clever editing to me me look good.
Another great collaboration. Just a great rendition of this song. Well done, both of you!
Wonderful arrangement and performances! Great job!
Thanks. Sincerely appreciated.
FYI: I only learned today that @pbelgium doesn't even use an iPad... he uses an iPhone to record the guitar and mix the vocal into the mastered mix.
Of course, the iPhone can only use a subset of the typical mastering tools.
He relies on EQ 6144 by DDMF and Altispace 2 by @j_liljedahl with the added
benefits of Magic Death Eye Stereo from DDMF as required.
If you don't own these gems... add them to your list. The upcoming DDMF "The Strip" app includes the 6144 EQ code combined with a compressor and some nice features like "Phase Invert" and more... efficient code so you can drop this gem into every track and not just the master. 6144 EQ emulates the Neve Console EQ functions.
