App to convert incoming click track to MIDI sync ?
I am looking for an app that can receive sync clicks from click tracks or synthesizers like Korg Volcas and turn this into MIDI sync. The input would be through the microphone / headphone jack on the iPad so that an attached USB audio device can still be used for audio i/o.
Does something like this exist in the iOS world ? I do have a redsound soundbite that can do this, but ideally I would like to have it all running inside the ipad.

Could you use something like the Envelope Follower in Drambo to detect the audio transient (click), then output it as a MIDI event?
Could you do it the other way round using the free Korg app SyncKontrol? It was originally to sync the Monotribe, but also works with Volcas. So you would sync the Volcas from the iPad.
…but you can’t send audio through the headphone jack and the USB at the same time can you?
I think SyncKontrol also works with Ableton link, so maybe you could use an iPhone to connect the sync cable to the Volca/s and sync with Ableton Link to the iPad?
If this works in Drambo, I think you need to to be able to set an offset somewhere, to compensate for audio latency between devices.
And I guess you still need some start/stop command to run in sync.
I am interested in this, might be a solution to sync a multi track recorder with Drambo or AUM.
Sorry, but that can’t work. IOS only allows one audio input device at a time. You can’t use the microphone / headphone jack and USB audio device at the same time. The only way you can use the headphone jack at the same time is if there’s no mic. As soon as there is a mic detected, it’s recognized as an audio device. The last audio input device plugged in wins.
a Korg device with sync input can be used as click-track-MIDI clock converter. With some audio/synthesiser wizardry one can even derive a click track from general audio source.
I often used the Korg SQ-1 connected with a MIDI cable to an iPad. To have a manual knob for tempo only. And, when a modular synth was in reach, create irregular MIDI clock with random generator modules.
Yes, and it could be MIDI mapped to Drambo's Tap Tempo button.
Drambo can send MIDI Clock Sync.
Drambo supports negative clock offset by up to -150ms.
What about the Volca midi out mod. Would that help? Only £15 on eBay.

Thanks for the many suggestions. My initial idea was to get this done without the need to carry additional hardware around, but it looks as if iOS is unable to use both internal and USB audio at the same time - specially for input. I will probably go for one of the “Korg solutions”. I do have both Volcas with MIDI out mod and an SQ1 here - time to experiment.
