Video - Testing out the Krill Synth Randomizer (Genuine Soundware / GSi)

GSi Krill Synthesizer app / plugin just got a randomizer added in a recent update. (Please note that the dev now goes by the name Genuine Soundware on the AppStore). Here I demo the random function, mention some possibilities for quick tweaks, review how musical / usable the randomized presets are, as well as briefly reviewing the synth itself, and quickly demo roughly half of the factory presets. Midi was recorded from 4Pockets progressions into Ooda by Ryan Robinson / Audio Symmetric.

Please remember to thumbs-up 👍 etc if you find this useful, cheers!

Nice! I have a feeling that over time, this synth will develop into a “must have”. This developer’s “analog” know how is very good. Right now it feels very basic as far as functionality (as many have mentioned), but the sound is really good and this randomizer function definitely adds potential, serious value. 🤔

  • Agree with @Stuntman_mike and listening to some of the patches in the vid it does sound interesting and analog. Randomizer, mmm..
The GSi delays bring something different and unique, but I do feel this synth needs to develop into something way more special for me to justify the price tag compared to synths like DRC, Zeeon and VAPoly, which has so much more going on for the same price. For now, to be fair with that kind of competition this should be a 3 to 5 buck synth. And I do find that the GUI looks (hideous, sorry) very 1990ties (compare this interface with the new Yonac Trooper synth). It lacks that beautiful Echo B2 look that makes you wanna tweak the hell out of it!

  • True that it's a pretty cheap looking UI for a 10 buck Synth. Dev is receptive to feedback and contactable via their website. Maybe worth shooting him a message. What would you guys like to see added? Would be nice to see a reverb added for sure.

It’s difficult to say what I would like to see added. Personally I don’t care too much about onboard fx, I usually add my own anyway (although I really like to use VAPoly’s chorus to color the sound). I would LOVE to see a U-He Repro5 / Prophet 5 synth, but how realistic is that to ask from this synth? :)

Edit: talking about the Prophet 5, I just remembered he is using one in his test video of the Space Echo.. so he probably owns one! (I send him an email).

Do that! However, their whole modus operandi behind this synth seems to be that iOS is perfect for a simple synth. See the appstore description. I can't imagine they're suddenly going to develop this into anything radical! But this is definitely a very capable developer, so I imagine that if they did develop something more 'out there', it would be very very good.

In true analog fashion optionally route the (filter) envelope to pulse-width of oscillator 1 :sunglasses:
The UI is almost there (Filter envelope to OSC1), just add a toggle button to select pitch, pulse-width or both.

Using the envelope to control the pulse-width is a very good way to add extra 'bite' to the sound.

I'm very careful these days so I don't fall back to app-o-holism so I ain't got Krill yet...

    Cheers!

These sound like great - and easy to impliment - suggestions. Hit up the dev please!

Although a $10 synth on desktop is dirt cheap 😂

    🤩

  • Yeah, checking out the randomizers posted on the other related thread, eg Tera Pro, I have to say Krill could do a lot better in its randomization capabilities...
