Is the 2018 iPad Pro Apple’s most overpowered hardware ever?

The 2018 iPad Pro has been way ahead of iPadOS since it was made. Even four years later mine never falters. And now it can even run Stage Manager, which for a while was M1-only.

I’ve been running the iPadOS 16 beta on mine for a while and it still flies. What’s more, it was the first Apple device to have the cool flat-sided design that spread to the iPhone and Mac.

Anyone else love this machine? And can anyone think of another Apple computer that was so far ahead and so overpowered at launch?

  • I would say so. The 2018 has been keeping up with the M1 in all things audio with no problem. It’s a really special iPad that has aged so gracefully.

I would still buy a used 2018 today with no issues or thoughts of what it can’t do. I’m sure it’ll begin to show its age with iOS 16 and beyond as they start separating the M’s from the A’s but it’s a great device.

  • I had a similar experience with the 2017 iPad Pro just before I replaced it with my new iPad from 2021 it was running the latest OS and could keep up with all the modern music apps with no issues whatsoever which I found very amazing
The only reason I gave it away was because the battery life was going so level that I needed to recharge it every two hours and the recharging took like 10 hours which was a pain in the butt but with everything else I never had any crashes or problems running even the most demanding apps

  • Yep
    2018 iPad Pro here
    It just works so well
Not interested in updating this iPad any time soon

  • So I should get one then? Got a 6th gen regular at the moment

It’s what I use, and really, no complaints, no issues at all. Also no compulsion to upgrade, for quite some time at least. 12.9” because the screen is lovely to use.

How’s the 6th gen? I just bought one refurbished that I’m waiting on in the mail to upgrade from an air 1.

  • I was thinking I would get an M2 Pro whenever they arrive, just for Stage Manager, but now it works on the 2018, I don’t need too.

I also don’t want to start over with my sticker job. My 2018 is looking just perfect 🤩

  • I think the iPad 2 and air2 also deserve awards for long service.

Works well for most things. Lots of cpu heavy apps going at once can start to weigh it down but I also put it in airplane mode and rarely have problems

  • During this love
Should I update my 2018 pro to iOS 16 ?
Waiting for my presonus atom to arrive , just want to know that I break anything going to 16 as 15 runs sweet
    Thanks

I found my old Air 2 the other day - still works, but it is quite slow compared to my newer Air 4. Saying that I much prefer the Air 2 design, and it's back in service as an fx unit.

Power-wise - I've yet to push the Air 4 over the limit.

  • The difference between the 2016 iPad Pro and the 2018 iPad Pro is just phenomenal. My last few vids were made on the older iPad as I had dropped and cracked my screen on the newer one. Due to a 19 day lockdown in the Chinese city I’m in, I wasn’t able to fix the 2018 one and it was extremely painful to have to use the older pro, which is literally a piece of shit in comparison. I actually made several vids on the 2016 one that I wasn’t able to upload as I had so many dsp issues. Fixing the screen on the 2018 Pro cost about 200 bucks. Money well spent in my opinion. I don’t think I’ll need to update this baby for at least 2 or 3 years.

  • iPad Pro 2020 user here. Basically the same device as the 2018 Pro (A12X vs A12Z, only an extra GPU core…) I like that all models have 6 gigs of RAM. I’m pushing my Pro with demanding tasks every single day, but it barely has to do something from a CPU perspective. I’ve never run into problems whatsoever. No matter what I throw at it. It’s here to stay. In my opinion both the 2018 and 2020 iPad Pro lineup are so ridiculous powerful that upgrading to the shiny new iPad Pro M2 won’t make a huge difference in heavy workloads. That’s for now at least. Years from now, it would be wise to trade the A for an M. Until then, I’m a happy iPad Pro user.

  • If I replaced my 2018 Pro with the equivalent M2 model, it comes in at over €2,000, and adds zero new features other than the cameras that I never use, and the fancy screen (which looks great).

Very happy to have this amazing 2018 model. Also, I would have to re-do all the stickers on the back. I might treat it to a new case though. The 4-year-old Smart Cover is looking a bit past its best.

  • Plus if you upgrade to the new largest model, you'll need a new smart keyboard if you have one, due to the tiny difference of screen size. Another scammy move from apple to squeeze every penny out of their users.
