“Fallen Heroes” (A Staffpad Sketch)

[EDITED TO PROVDE MORE CONTEXT}. Thanks for showing me I was not being clear @LinearLineman.

Struggling with a creative block while waiting with my wife in a hospital room. We’re going on 74 days straight for her. I had a 10 day break for a Covid infection and my daughter took over visiting her. We’re waiting for intestinal fistulas to heal naturally with support from IV nutrition so the intestines can go dormant. Slowly taking the path back to natural nutrition at the clear liquids stage.

I started a Staffpad session with the intention of creating a tribute to “Fallen Heroes” that give their lives in defense of the people and country. Plenty of time to consider the fragility of human life and give gratitude for good health and civil order.

  • For those who aren’t up to your challenges it should be said that your wife, not you, has been in the hospital for 2 1/2 months and you are the faithful caregiver. Lucky you, a 10 day Covid holiday! Life can truly be limit testing. I hope she’ll be home soon and you can relax a bit. Keep doing the right thing, mate. You’ve gotten quite good at it.

Thanks. I agree that the music provides the right mix of ceremony, grieving and gratitude I was aiming for. War is sometimes forced on a nation and patriots step up to meet the challenge and defend the nation or sometimes to defend another nation that was invaded. There are bad actors in history that must be defeated through battle because they will not negotiate for a lasting peace but will double down on violence and war.

Pray for the end of tyrants and the people that assist in giving them more and more power.

  • Your opening melody reminded me a little of 'Pictures At An Exhibition'. You then went on to expand and develop that idea very well. Very uplifting and hopeful. I would have liked it to have been a little longer, but I know you have much more important things on your mind at the moment. There are many good people here on the forum praying for you both, my wife and myself included.

Thanks for the listen and the considered comment. I think you know that getting feedback really helps inspire more work so I appreciate you finding the time to do this and to even give me a heads up that you intended to do so yesterday.

I also tried to make another sketch using unusual Staffpad instruments but it came out as a somewhat cheesy Lounge pop track... arg.

  • Solemn, fragile, strong, hopeful.

This sounds really beautiful Mr. McD

Thanks… that encourages me to keep trying to beat down the temptation to just keep doom scrolling and actually make a contribution with some applied effort. I’m sure many deal with Writer’s Block and even when they make something, they resist
Posting because they lack confidence or trust the audience to be kind or supportive.

Ahhh... cheesy lounge music. In my twenties, I spent many evenings in Holiday Inn and bowling alley lounges playing 'My Cheri Amour' and 'Color My World'. Sometimes I even got paid. One night I met an older woman! I think she said she was a 'dancer' from the club across the street. When things get tough, think back to the good times. I will enjoy listening to your cheesy lounge music tonight.

  • This immediately conjured up an image of a 1960s spy movie. I pictured James Coburn in a Turkish discoteque surrounded by beautiful, scantily clad women. That trumpet line is perfect. Cheesy yes... but very entertaining.

Did you remember the James Coburn “In Like Flint” movie (a James Bond style spy)? His role in the Magnificent Seven was also memorable. What a great set of teeth. Just thinking about it makes me thinking of Dudley Do-right posing after a good deed.

That's the one! I also liked Dean Martin as Matt Helm. I remember walking into town with my buddies to see Magnificent Seven at the Tivoli theater. They had 'double features' back then. He didn't have many lines, but he didn't need them. Don't bring a knife to a gunfight... unless you're James Coburn!
