Natural Woman (featuring JanKun on vocals)

Here's an update of an acoustic guitar rendition of 'Natural Woman' featuring the amazing vocals of @JanKun.

The vocals were inspired by the recent (and also great) performance of 'Time After Time' by @McD, who bravely pushed himself to sing again after undergoing throat surgery. JanKun thought this was, 'A great example and beautiful message of hope - where there is a will, there is a way.'

My thoughts: This is a very difficult song to sing and JanKun took it and made it his own! Totally blew me away! Just listen. Merci beaucoup JanKun.

Outstanding performances from both of you, excellent guitar playing and amazing vocal. The way the intensity builds up is just great.

What a great cover. It's really hard to take a classic song and improve upon it, especially when previous performers include Aretha Franklin and Carole King, but you've somehow managed it 👍

  • Hi pbelgium,
Very nice vocals, and the rendition is perfect for JanKun.
I am digging this recording a lot!
McD is truly an inspiration, in many accounts!!!
    The guitar accompaniment is beautiful.
    Thanks for this.

Damn indeed. This turned out great. @JanKun’s vocal has some really cool touches to make it stand out in a crowd. I know he did lot of a takes to insure it was interesting musically and he nailed it but all the takes had something fresh in the interpretation… that’s what I look for in a singer. It’s a form of improvisation or rather interpretation since the original is there to create an expectation in the listener that can be reinforced or challenged.

Looking at @pbelgium’s SoundCloud there are more pure guitar accompaniements just begging for a vocal:
    Isn’t She Lovely
    You’ve Got a Friend
When Will I See You Again
And the extremely challenging “Kiss from a Rose” (heads up @JanKun… this leaves a lot of room for musical discovery)

Hit the “See All” link and send DM @pbelgium for a wave file to sing along with in your favorite DAW and then send him back a VOCAL ONLY tracks he’s make a really good mix for publication.

It would be great to hear all these accompaniement tracks with vocals.

  • Wowzer. The guitar really blossoms under @JanKun ’s vocal. 👍👍👍👍🎂🔥

  • This is really good!

    @JanKun, your vocals are excellent!

@pbelgium as always, great playing and an amazing job with the mix!

    Wow… EXCELLENT…

  • @pbelgium
Your guitar part was extremely well done and so inspiring. It reminded me a lot of the type of guitar parts Jeff Buckley was playing on his covers. It made me feel home and comfortable to sing. I am glad you enjoyed the vocals and looking for further collabs.
And to any singer on the forum, on top of being a great guitar player, Paul has a great ear for highlighting people's vocals strength in a mix. It is really a pleasure to work with him, so don't hesitate !

Thanks for taking the time to listen @AlterEgo_UK. I recorded the guitar (Taylor GS Mini) straight into TwistedWave on my iPhone using a Tascam iM2. A bit of EQ (DDMF 6144) and reverb (AltiSpace2) post-production.

    Write that down:

    DDMF 6144
    Altispace2 reverb

Got ‘em but need to make them my go to’s for a few weeks. They are very transparent for just create a beautiful space for
Your guitar. Do you use them as well to process the vocal track? I know I sent you a raw vocal and you really made it sound so much better so the tools you grab for mastering vocals will also be instructive. I heard the unprocessed @JanKun
Recoding and it also got a complete make over with EQ and Verb and maybe something else too.

Please share your go to tools because your recordings and mastered collabs are truly special as works of sound engineering and you seem to claim no special knowledge but that just means you have a great pair of ears which we cannot buy… but we can buy your tools.

  • Hi @McD, I'm certainly no sound engineer, but thanks for inquiring. For vocals, I also used the DDMF 6144 and AltiSpace2 with a short plate reverb. In addition, some light/transparent compression with MagicDeathEye. I find that it's quite difficult to make things sound bad with these apps - but not impossible ;). If I'm not using these I go with the excellent ToneBooster apps (I'm on iPhone, so no Fabfilter apps for me :'( ). On the master effects, I typically use MagicDeathEye (not just for compression - the saturation and extra EQ do wonderful things), AltiSpace2 with a longer plate reverb (or chamber/room), finishing with TB Barricade. I use Youlean LM to keep an eye on the levels and spectrum.

  • Great combination of talents @pbelgium and @JanKun … it just got better and better as it went along !

  • Thanks for listening @GeoTony - hopefully more to come.

  • Thank you for listening @GeoTony !

    Something's cooking !

  • @pbelgium @JanKun nice stuff. The sound is great. The voice fantastic. The Taylor Mini played amazingly well. All mixed on an iPhone 🕺

  • Chills… Excellent tone, articulation and intimacy of guitar and vox, great sympathy between the two channels.

A hard piece to bite off and chew!

Wow, just stumbled across this one @pbelgium and @JanKun sublime singing and guitar accompaniment. What a brilliant performance ! Perfectly recorded and produced too, absolutely lovely

  • An Aretha Franklin song covered by my favorite ABF guitar player plus favorite ABF vocalist - that's a clear formula for instant success. Bravo x3! 🤩🤩🤩
