Bitwig Spectral Suite Additional add on $79!
Not sure about paying extra for what is already a subscription DAW.

Oh dear. Nice devices but the Bitwig community will be furious. It's definitely NOT an instabuy for me. Now grabbing some popcorn and heading over to the KVR sub forum...

Wow. This stinks. Also seems to be in clear violation of their "subscription = all updates free for 12 months" promise.
My first thought - here's another argument to avoid subscriptions wherever possible.
The second - if I was a competitor, my spectacular crossgrade offer would be out still today. 🤷
Yeah, this is a weird decision. I won't be getting this even though I'm really enjoying Bitwig. Plus I just renewed a few months ago.
Is Bitwig only subscription now? I had been thinking of giving it a go, for the Eurorack friendly modulate everything, but I’ll stick with Ableton otherwise…
update
So I just emailed their tech support:
“ Hi, I am a long time Ableton Suite owner. Lately, due to an increasing investment in Eurorack, I was drawn to Bitwig’s ‘modulate everything’ approach, and considering a switch. Then I discovered that yours is a subscription model; and on top of that, are now charging people extra for enhancements like the Spectral pack, despite the subs claim that the ‘purchase’ gets you a year of updates ‘free’. So thanks, Bitwig, you’ve made my mind up.
I’m sticking with Ableton.”
@Svetlovska It's a yearly renewal cost of $169.
Huh. Guess I’m sticking with Ableton then. You have to pay for the big upgrades, but there’s no ongoing fee.
I don't think Bitwig is a subscription per se. Once you purchase it you get a year of updates, but if you decide not to pay for the next year of updates don't you get to keep what you have?
I'm not sure what happens if you decide to pay for updates after e.g. 3 years. Do you get all the updates from the previous years plus one more year, and is the cost the same?
For example you can update Studio One from v1 to v6 for the same cost as if you would update v5 to v6, I don't know if Bitwig is the same in that regard.
@branis Yes, upgrade always gets you the latest if you skip years. It doesn't cost more.
This new approach is bad for existing customers who pay to keep up every year but also, it might not work if someone isn't keeping up with latest base daw because new devices likely rely on same underlying code.
Bitwig is trying to have their cake and it eat it too. Doesn't work. Add-ons or renewals can't have both, esp when they said all updates would be free. With Ableton, it's only addon's not sub on top of that. Reason is one or the other.
@auxmux yes, that doesn't make sense
According to some posts at KVR there is something cooking at Bitwig that hasn't been announced yet. But the "insider" was happy about it. If they would introduce a premium "suite" product along with a switch from the pseudo-subscription model to a rather standard pay-for-the-major-upgrade model I could appreciate the change.
This looks cheaper than the Ozone plugins.
Let’s just hope that Bitwig is never bought out like Native Instruments was.
I think for specialized tools like this one, the concept of an Add-On makes sense. Not everyone needs this level of tooling in their pipeline, but if they do…well you should pay for it since it’s so specific to a need.
I don’t need it so I’ll opt out for now.
I love using Bitwig when i use it and plan to upgrade at the end of November…or wait for Black Friday to do so. I just missed their recent upgrade offer due to other expenditures.
As a renewal customer this particular suite of tools being an extra cost doesn’t bother me. If they did this for the “Grid” well that would be another story.
