  • kobamoto & Samu,
can you please explain to me what do you mean?

  • @DrugBug - Though I haven't tried what they are referring to, I believe what they meant was that you have a devices that could have been a pretty versatile production tool (it has pads, piano keys, and CC knobs), but they all have to be set to the same MIDI channel. MIDI data is transmitted either in OMNI setting (which I believe is sent on all channels), or defaults to Channel 1.

Why does this matter? Let's say you want to play a simple piano line while tapping out a drum beat behind it. Well, the MIDI data would have to go to different apps via different channels, but the MPK Mini can't do that. So the pads play notes (like C2, C#2, etc., or whatever they are set to with the software), but those will play the same instrument as the keys. I guess you could even imagine some type of drone or swell in the background controlled by a 3rd app, and it would be nice to have the 8 CC knobs mapped to that app as well.

It would have been a nice feature, but it's not one that matters to me much, I'm more of a one-at-a-time recorder with DAW's.

On the MPK Mini Mk2 the pads and piano-keys can set to send on independent channels but only way to change that is to use a configuration program on the computer. There are 4 'program-slots' on the MPK Mini MK2.

The 'knobs' always transmit on the same channel as the keyboard.

What I would have loved to see is a way to quickly change the midi-channel the keyboard and pads transmit on.
This can be done with most controllers with a few button-presses.

  • and the configuration program is? is it free to download?

Yepp, Downloadable from the Akai web-site for Win/Mac, unfortunately there is no iOS app...

  • ok, thank you!

  • I've sold mine a while ago because they didn't updated the firmware 'til this day so it can work on iPads without the USB hub hack.

Does it still prompt an error "This device is using too much power" when connected? Because I loved it as a controller. It had all I needed.

Yepp, It's unusable with iOS without a USB-Hub. But even with an un-powered hub it works just fine with many things connected. So the MPK Mini Mk2 simply reports 'wrong power-requirements' to the host and that can only be fixed by a firmware update from Akai, but I feel Akai focuses more on new products rather than fixing problems with existing products.

I guess it's safe to warn iOS users that MPK Mini Mk2 will not work nicely with an iPad unless using it with an USB-Hub.

  • i bought one of these little hub/splitters to use with devices such as the Mini MK2. Plug it onto the cable and you barely notice it, like it becomes a part of the cable.

    Cool idea

  • Yeah and another benefit is that you can plug in a 2nd device (pad controller, audio interface, etc.) and use them at the same time.
