Hi Richard ! Don't call this scrappy. It is a very difficult task to cover Neil Young, you did great !
Just wondering, is it the sound of the piezzo on your SJ200 ? If so, it sounds pretty natural, what did you use to treat the signal ? I am having a hard time to get the pick up on my Gibson to sound natural like this !
Thanks for listening!
The acoustic guitar is indeed recorded with the Piezo, and then run through an acoustic guitar IR - it's a really cool trick! After that there is just a bit of EQ and some room reverb from Klevgrands RUM, and some compression to even out my playing.
The specific IR I used was a cheap commercial one from 3sigma, the Martin 45:

But there are others available, including many free ones:

Thank you. I checked the 3sigma promotional video and it really brings life to a dull piezzo. Gonna give this a try with the free one first.
By the way, I thought about you the other day, I saw a video from Steve Albini about recording acoustic instruments. I'll put the link down below. The first exemple is really great for acoustic guitar and vocals performance. I didn't know it was possible to achieve such a great separation between guitar and vocals with bidirectional mics.
@JanKun yes I’ve seen that video, I have to say I can’t achieve that level of separation with my mic, even though the cardioid pattern is tight and the SM7 is renowned for having great separation. In my recordings it still picks up a lot of the guitar, despite my best efforts at positioning. Steve Albini is using figure 8 mics, maybe they have more off-axis rejection?
It seems there is a specific point between the 2 directivity lobes where you can achieve great rejection. You can hear it on the video.
Big Neil Young fan here. Love this song. You did a great job! I did learn to play the harmonica parts to this song fairly well years ago.
Hi richardyot,
I love acoustic guitar music, and this is excellent.
I am not very familiar with this Neil Young song, and I am so glad I heard this from you!!!
Beautiful recording, with natural acoustic sound!!!
Love this.
Thank you.
Rene
Thanks, we should totally do this one together at an open mic night! 😃
Rene, run to your nearest record store, buy Harvest by Neil Young and don’t let it leave your turntable until you’ve heard the whole thing at least a dozen times. The seventies was a decade that gave birth to many classic albums, and this one was one of the very best.

+10000 ! ! ! Rene, you could do wonder covering some of those songs !
Along with Harvest, I'd recommend After The Goldrush. Then there's the stuff with Crosby, Stills and Nash...❤
Don't go in this rabbit hole @Spidericemidas !
On the beach. Tonight's the night...
And this underrated musical gem Deadman's soundtrack !
Neil Young's 1970s output is pretty much unparalleled by anyone IMO, so many great albums:
After The Goldrush
Harvest
On The Beach (my personal favourite)
Tonight's The Night
Zuma
Comes A Time
Rust Never Sleeps
Every one of those albums is amazing!
“…Ticket down to LA…..” almost appeared effortless, great man! Thanks for posting this
@richardyot
Really good you crazy motherfucker. If anything, perhaps just a bit too cheery....
What's next in the Neilverse which you are obviously well suited to?
For The Turnstiles?
Personally, I think I might try Helpless, but my soprano's been losing ground
Thanks for listening, there are probably more Neil Young covers on the way. I'd have to buy a banjo to play For The Turnstiles though, and learn to play it 🤣
