O Beauteous Rose
This is one of my best classical style improvisations. It’s based on a theme I wrote for an unfinished musical about Harry Houdini. Hence the mysterious nature of it. Have a listen to this one @JanKun.
It might be worth orchestrating.

This is gorgeous, Mike !
Please share your project. I cannot promise anything as the piano already tells so much.
And if you also have a midi file to share for your Glistener improvisation, that would be great!
That’s a good one.
You were pretty young when you were writing musicals, right? Does the theme date back to the 70’s?
And can you recall it from memory or did you do did out the score or a lead sheet? Is it something you have improvised on over the years?
I like to see that Cubasis project file for this one… it’s got a lot of open space to add extra touches.
I’ve been studying @JanKun’s Metropolis score to see how he approached it and got such good results.
@McD @jankun, I wrote the theme for this in the mid 80s. The 70s I wrote songs and one musical, The Time Machine. In the 80s I wrote several more… all going nowhere except for a workshop with Stephen Sondheim which didn’t work out so well, either. I certainly wasn’t cut out for the demands of musical theater. The need to create and change material on the spot and also to write theme based material for a dramatic purpose. I did some of my best songwriting in them, but writing music in various styles for specific situations was not applicable to my limited range of talents.
I’ll send you both the midi for this and Glistener. Do what you will!

Hi LinearLineman,
Very talented musician, you are!!!
Very melodic, and quite contemporary for a classical music - I love it!!!
This one is very dramatic, and a bit sad.
Very interesting note you played in 0:39
Perfect soundtrack for a musical.
Glad I heard this!
Rene
Thanks for listening @ReneAsologuitar. Yes, modern classical is the genre, I guess.
Perhaps it’s my untrained ears but it seems to me a little bit of jazz found it’s way into this as well. A remarkable piece of music.
Wow. This one is so deep. I love it. Pure melodious, melancholy magic.
Quite an intense track considering it is so sparse. I really enjoyed it and I could hear some snippets of Sondheim type complex chords and unusual juxtaposition in there too.
@MadeofWax, yeah, can’t keep the jazz out entirely, it seems. Maybe it’s just a wink not to take it all too seriously. 😉😎
Thx @dav. Good to hear from you🙏
I’ve pared the synths off my tracks in general @AlterEgo_UK. At heart I’m a piano player. I admire John Lewis for the simplicity and intensity of his melodic lines. I try to do the same… imbue each note with passion,
