Looking Up At Stars
@McD @JanKun I am thinking about doing this one in StaffPad. I currently have the default libraries and Berlin Strings. Can you recommend any other sound packs that would work with this?
The title comes from the gutter quote by Oscar Wilde. I know it's been used a million times before, but I like it. This started out as a bunch of random notes in the MIDI editor that I arranged around and ended up with this.
Comments
Nice melody, and quite cinematic.
I love the vocals and the harmony.
Rene
None of the Staffpad libraries are currently on sale so I’ll recommend a cheaper one that’s handy:
The Guitars pack for $10. They are all acoustic stringed instruments.
I love to use the Ukulele as a “Harp” that cuts though the mix. The Charango sounds like a Zither like the one used in the recent Sherlock Holmes scores (Hans Zimmer?).
Here’s a video demo’ing the sounds.
The Felt Piano is also a very useful library ($30?).
Steel Drums ($20?).
For all the rest I’d wait for a sale… you’ll be surprised at how good the default library is until you start need more articulations like the extra cool Bartok Pizzicato (where they pull the string out so it snaps against the fingerboard.
CinePercussion would be #1 from the $99 libraries but @Jankun prefers the Berlin Perc. The Berlin libs are recorded in a larger hall and thus have extra reverb but for me that sounds good like concert hall.
I love acoustic sounding compositions that sound like “Tangerine Dream” EDM compositions… like this one. Really good work.
Ahh yes, Tangerine Dream. Pretty sorority girls. Ganja. Good times. I feel sorry for the woke kiddies who don't know what they're missing. It's so sad.
As @McD pointed out, it is better to wait for the next sales. For now you should be good to go with what you already have. The Berlin Strings was a safe bet, it's the best purchase you could make.
For the percussion, the stock library can work. I own both Cineperc and Berlin they are both nice. The Berlin seems to have more round robins but cineperc bring more diversity.
Your piece sounds great! Can't wait to hear your staffpad version !
@JanKun @McD Thanks for the input, gentlemen. It confirms my thoughts about using what I currently have, and waiting for the next sale. I am thinking about taking a break for a little while. When I do that, it seems to help with new ideas. StaffPad is an entirely new ballgame for me and I'm hoping for some good results.
Great track, loved the sparse beginning and changes in orchestration… hope your break goes well and you come back invigorated.
I owe @GeoTony some thanks for bringing this back to the front page. I must have missed it going back through creations post-Covid. Great themes and your use of vocals as texture always satisfies. If you do revisit this in Staffpad I’ll definitely want to hear the results.
Hi Tony,
The weather last week was really nice and I decided to do a few more. I love to work outside! This weekend is supposed to be in the 60s so I might try one last track before I take a break.
Thanks for listening!
Hi Mac,
I'm hoping to have some nice weather this weekend. I love to sit outside and play with my iPad. I really want to try something that approximates the ambiguous time signature that I heard in your last post. I thought that was really good and it gave me some new ideas. Thanks!
Agreed, thanks Tony for bumping this up as I must have missed it as well. I miss a lot of stuff posted in creative lately as there’s never enough hours in a day.
Amazing work @Paulieworld! I too, dig the vocal textures, and really love the string parts 3/4 of way through. I’ll be looking forward to a Staffpad recreation from you guys!
One of these days, I’d like to pick up and get into Staffpad myself. I know I wouldn’t have the time and thought capacity to fully devote right now, (shoot I don’t even have time for the apps I already have!) but after I retire I most definitely will. I love some of those sounds!
@Edward_Alexander Thanks Ed! I hear you regarding hours in day. I have been looking forward to retirement, but if this inflation keeps up I may not be able to.
I thought this one turned out pretty good, too and I appreciate the feedback. Thanks for listening. Have a great weekend!
