New MacOS for iPad

I just read about a leak that Apple might be working on a new (2023) slimmed down MacOS version that is custom made for iPads with 25% bigger elements to make it touch friendly.
Seeing the recent MacOS development with visual elements it doesn’t seem completely unrealistic to me.

Exciting :)

  • don't believe that. but it sounds like typical apple d***move to leave the M1 alone and still owing the customers why they need 16GB of RAM in their 1TB devices ;)

  • If this is true and it happens then that might be the motivation needed to leave the Apple ecosystem. The M1 has the power to do all of this and to make everything new an M2 thing is just corporate money grabbing.

  • Apple are probably testing things like this all the time.

I remember when the first Intel Macs came out and Apple said they had previous generations of Mac OS that they compiled to run on Intel.

Apple work on lots of stuff. Very little of it gets released.

  • This is overdue.
Using a tablet at home doesn't match well with what a phone OS should deliver 😉

Exactly! Who knows, they may be playing around with a touchscreen MacBook… 🫢

  • I don't really see the point of this, running apps that are not optimised for a touch UI will be horrible.

    Yes please!

  • The other places that talk about this “leak” all say that you’d still need to run iPad apps, it’s not like you could suddenly use any desktop software on the iPad. I think it was macrumors that had a decent long article about it.

  • I don’t believe a word of it… and neither should you.

  • I'd go along with the idea that they've been doing this all along for testing purposes, or the alternative posited in this article:

"The other possible explanation is this wasn't macOS at all. Apple could be working to bring iPadOS even closer to macOS by adding a Menu Bar and other Mac-like interactions."

    https://appleinsider.com/articles/22/10/20/apple-rumored-to-be-testing-macos-for-m2-ipad-pro

Making iPadOS closer to MacOS makes it easier for people to get a Mac if they don't have one. And now that iPadOS is different from iOS it makes more sense to do this sort of thing, I suppose.

Just a quick warning about that site: They post a LOT of unsourced rumors and not a lot of them turn out to be accurate.

On the rare occasions I indulge in rumors I might as well go all the way. Mostly I think of rumors as the person saying "I wish blah blah blah, and this tiny scrap of evidence gives me false hope."

  • I must be alone in REALLY not wanting a hybrid OS. I mean, I'd love to have Fusion 360 and Ableton on the iPad, but I want native UI, not something that straddles the fence and tries to context-shift.
I really hate what has happened to Windows and find the touch-based design elements annoying on desktop, and the desktop-based design elements on a tablet.

No, but it opens the floodgates for them to finally develop Logic for iPad..Or Cubase, Ableton, FL studio

  • macOS Ventura gets a lot of its new 'design' from iOS/iPadOS so it'll be fun to check out for that alone.
Both iPadOS16.1 and macOS Ventura will be out on Monday and I guess most 'Apple Apps' will get updated as well.

The iPad is primarily designed as a 'Touch Device' so until we see a Mac with a touch-screen macOS for iPad is less likely to happen in the wild.

I would not be at all surprised if there are internal builds of macOS for iPad to evaluate the over all usability without an external keyboard and pointing device. (Internal betas are part of the development process. No one believed in the native macOS for Intel builds before the bomb dropped, same with with macOS on ARM).

Most 'native' Mac apps are NOT designed for touch and would most likely not work that well without the use of an keyboard and mouse and in that case it makes more sense to get a MacBook...

Regarding touch in general the 'new' stuff in Logic feels like it's already designed for touch so time will tell...

    Cheers!

A word of caution to all thinking about updating to iPadOS 16… developer and author Federico Viticci (well known in Apple circles) says the floating windows interface is still very buggy and problematic. I don’t plan on updating immediately. Possibly wait a month or two for them to work out more bugs.

Just check out any number of his recent posts highlighting current (known) bugs, none of which will be addressed prior to the update: https://twitter.com/viticci

You actually can use iPadOS 16 and leave Center Stage switched off. Should be pretty much the same experience as iPadOS 15 then.

Yes, with but with all the added small features like progress indicator when copying files with the files.app :sunglasses:

About the macOS for iPad. I’d love to have some macOS features on iPad. Like the openness to install any app and deep dive into the file system etc. Also the amount of apps in general. So any step into that direction would be gold!

But yeah when it comes to touch friendliness it could be a mess.

I hope they’ll figure out a good middle ground system that gathers the best of both worlds.

Once they get the bugs worked out, it should work better than ever for those who like to use a mouse with their iPads.

Incidentally, I just saw confirmation that the head of Apple’s industrial design (Evans Hankey), who took over after Jony Ive left, is now leaving. Perhaps a bigger shakeup is needed at Apple… like maybe Tim Cook (who turned Apple into the most profitable company on the planet) should start thinking about handing the reins over to his replacement soon. Apple needs to aggressively pursue new markets and Tim Cook seems quite complacent in this regard. They now need a CEO with the vision of an Elon Musk (but with the common sense of a Steve Jobs).
