True Love Waits, Radiohead acoustic cover

Ugly cover, to say the least. I only posted it to remind myself that learning is based on trials and failures. This time I learned about mic placements in live situation. Every cloud has a silver lining.

  • You did a great job - what a difficult song to cover, the vocal is quite challenging :)

Is that a new mic? I thought the mic placement sounded fine, and the recording overall sounds great - both the guitar and the vocal are really clear and sound good to my ears.

I actually bought 2 mics. The second is visible as a reflection on the guitar.
Both from warm audio (wa 87 r2 for the large diaphragm and the wa84 for the small diaphragm). These are clones of legendary Neumann. They obviously don't sound exactly like the mics they're based on (they cost a fraction of the originals) but these are very good microphones. I recommend the wa84 for acoustic guitar, it would do wonders to track your j200.

Today when experimenting with mic placements, I quickly recorded a cover of Elliott Smith. 2 takes of live acoustic/vocals hard panned in the style of E. Smith. You can hear it here, the performance is far from perfect but it was not the initial goal. Almost no EQ, I think those mics did a pretty decent job, what do you think ?

Yeah that sounds great. Great performance of a song I love and listen to a lot! And congratulations on the new mics, they sound fantastic.

  • Such an amazing song. Well done.

  • BTW, did you get a new interface as well?

  • Yah man! This is great! 🙌

I am planning to get an interface in the coming weeks, the zoom H4n preamps are an insult to the new mics...
Still trying to decide between SSL 2, MOTU M2 or M4, or Audient id14 mkii... Been watching plenty of reviews including Julian Krause, but the choice is hard.

I highly recommend the SSL2, the preamps are unbelievably quiet.

Yeah, from what I understood, preamps are extremely quiet, good converters, plenty of gain, and good headphones preamp. Do you use the 4k function or is it just gimmicky marketing bs ?
The thing is that in terms of specs the ssl2 seems to be the best in the price range, and I will probably get it at the end, but I heard several comparisons, and I tend to like the sound coloration of the id14 on acoustic guitar more than the ssl2... But I also heard about excessive heating of the id14 and the need to connect to a desktop when looking for more advanced routing setups... From what I read on the forum, @Telefunky is a huge fan of Audient, and I trust his expertise. The Audient seems more compact as well and headphones and inst input are in the front of the device...

I never use the 4k mode, I prefer to do any colouration in post personally.

I agree, the latest version they released on A Moon Shaped Pool, is heartbreakingly beautiful...

  • Vocal is a little too quiet, but this is a great cover of one of my favourite Radiohead songs, which I have also played on guitar, though.... Ooh, maybe 15 years ago. I hope you're performing these live!

No false humility from you, that was great. Also agree to bump up the vocal.

Glad you liked it! I posted a cover of Elliott Smith a bit upper in this thread of you want to listen (not a video, audio file only)

Thank you Gavin ! I actually started to record videos to push myself to play in some kind of live mindset since I don't play much live these days, but still I want to stay "in shape". Maybe I should try to find some open mics scenes here in Kyoto. Thanks for watching and glad you liked it ! I love this song too ! Your feedback is always greatly appreciated and valued ! Glad you chimed in!

    +++++++++++++
    Very emotional playing, and singing.
Your vocals is very warm and nice tone, even with very minimal eq.
Live performances, and acoustic playing is very bare, and really exposes vulnerabilities.
Great recording, and congrats on your new mics.
Love your productions, and choices of songs!!!
    With love and respect,

You bloody nailed it!. Man, these Elliott songs are hard, I really appreciate the difficulty. You’re good @JanKun !. 🙌

Thank you for watching Michael ! Sorry if it was perceived as fake humility. There are obviously things I like in this performance, but I don't really enjoy listening to it as a whole because of certain flaws.
I did two takes and was not fully satisfied but asked a friend I trust for his opinion. He told me I shouldn't try to perfect things too much and to post this one.
So far, the few people who commented seem to have enjoyed the video. it is heartwarming and that's what matters the most in the end.
Thank you again for watching. Still hoping to hear more great music from you !

  • It still always humbles me when I someone with actual musical talent just perform. Just a guitar and a voice… thank you.

Thank you so much for watching Rene, I subscribed to your channel !
I really love this combo vox/Acoustic guitar. As you mentioned, it is pretty bare and you cannot hide behind any effects trick. That's probably why I love this kind of performance so much. The connection between the performer and the listener is so direct. Thank you for your kind words as usual, it means a lot!
