Glitch/Slicer smackdown—Loopmix vs Replicant 2 vs Egoist vs…?
I love Replicant 2 as a way to rhythmically slice and remix a sample in time with my song. Egoist is a great way to come up with ideas, but a bit of a pain to get audio into.
How does the new Loopmix app compare? Anyone have preferences? Tips for remixing?
I have the trial for desktop, and bought it for iOS, but so far it seems more like another Amen Break chopper.
Comments
No offense, but if you have the apps, why are you asking how they compare?
If you're into glitch and sick of the iPad, maybe Glitchmachines plug-ins will appeal to you - https://glitchmachines.com
They're dirt cheap on Plugin Boutique right now - https://www.pluginboutique.com/manufacturers/101
I’ve not bought it yet, but am tempted. They’ve taken the Playbeat engine and expanded that. Looks fun but I don’t enjoy importing samples in iOS since the file workflow is slow and can be a killjoy.![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
May have to try the desktop demo.
I only have the trial of LoopMix so far, and it doesn’t load your own samples. But I am also interested in how others are using them.
Yeah, but you said you bought the app and the only difference between it and the desktop version is drag ‘n’ drop and multi-out.
I guess glitchbreaks is a bit of an amen loop chopper on the surface, but it does work nicely on lots of less rhythmic stuff too… looperator is great fun in a similar way too…
.
I'm loving loopmix and would choose it over glitchcore and replicant any day, although obviously both of those are faster in terms of just popping them in an fx slot. Loopmix definitely needs that drag and drop support, pretty sure it will get it. Multi out would be great, as would envelopes, wouldn't hold my breath for either tho
Was going to +1 this but is only certain apps in my collection that are a bit of a pain and they would be mainly visual media . Having to load via iTunes 😣 I’m in two minds to buy as I have egoist and love it but this does look like a much easier UI 🥰 . Might treat the wife to breakie in bed without benefits n see if I can push my luck 😂😂😂
If you like Egoist, you might want to check out Looperator, Effectrix, or even Turnado. All three have some slicing FX and they are designed to be AUv3 FX, unlike Egoist, which is more of an instrument or composing tool.
Also consider BeatCutter, which is now AUv3
Beatcutter was always auv3. The recent app store update notes are confusing, but being auv3 is not a new feature. Just worth mentioning!
Shameless self-promotion: You could look into Scatterbrain![B) B)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/sunglasses.png)
It does glitching and slicing, but also sends the slices out to multiple outputs:
And it doesn't just do Amen (but those are just so much fun to test with):
My favorite answer. Putting the slices on multi out and putting different fx on each can have some wonderful results and accidents.
I'm not quite sure what the question is, but routing Loopmix into Scatterbrain sounds like a fine idea. I'm intrigued!
Jamm Pro needs to be on the list as well. One of the best imo, incredibly deep
it is also relatively easy to set something up with koala (or loopy’s slicer), atom (any sequencer) and AUM, I made a quick AUM patch (find it here: https://patchstorage.com/sample-mangler/)
-> in atom you can change the ‘speed of the tempo’, the samples that get played in the different positions (by changing the pitch), you can easily get ratchet/stutter/density effects by using the repeat-draw function (and setting the quantise/ratio) parameters
-> in koala you can easily import a sample, stretch it, bounce it, divide it evenly in 16 divisions (or any number, or by transients) and then play with it, reverse slices/chops, pitch them, set attack/release.. use multi-outs, choke groups..
a vid showing it in action, not that musical but quick I guess:
I think I was put off by the reports of crashes/pops/crackles and no AUv3 when I looked into this one. There were issues with restoring purchases, too.
I see they had an update earlier this year and another one "coming soon" since May. See: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/37496/jammpro-official-help-thread/p4
No app store reviews since the last update either. Anyone care to chime in on the current state of Jamm Pro?
I already had this! Thanks for reminding me.
I’m totally into anything involving Koala. Will totally check that patch
Hang on.... Do I misremember that you'd sworn off iOS in favour of desktop just a few days ago Monsieur Charlie?!
It’s a hard habit to break!
Still using the instruments on iPad. Koala and Thumbjam. But playing them into ableton or the OP-1 to record them etc.
Good to hear you haven’t abandoned ship entirely!
How do I not have this app! Bought 😆
