Where are my Spacecraft files?

edited November 2022 in General App Discussion

Hi, tried asking this in an old "storage space" thread but it got smothered...
Just wondering where my files are saved when I record into Spacecraft, in AUM? That is, if I open Spacecraft in an FX slot, and record some audio into it, where is that audio saved? I want to free up ipad space, so need to understand whether deleting the project from AUM will delete the audio?

First, see how much storage Spacecraft (and AUM) is using. Go to Settings–>General–>iPad Storage, and wait for the list to populate (it takes a while). You can then use the search icon to quickly view the storage for a particular app. If they are not using very much storage, you won't be able to recover very much.

Viewing the storage for Spacecraft (in iPad Storage) might show the the audio files, and allow you to delete them from there. This is rare, but some apps allow this.

You can view the AUM presets in the Files app, so you can judge if a preset is large enough to include the audio. If that's the case, then deleting the AUM preset will delete the files.

However, the most likely situation is that those files are stored privately inside Spacecraft, so they can be used in multiple sessions. If that's the case, Spacecraft might allow you to manage them from inside the app. (This may require running the app stand-alone, if possible.) If it does not allow managing the files, your only option might be to delete Spacecraft and its data. Reinstalling will give you a clean copy of the app.

Edit: Looking at the Spacecraft Preset/Audio Management screen, it looks like you can delete the audio directly from there. That probably indicates that the files are stored privately in the app, and not in the AUM preset. They could be in both places, however.

By the way, you might edit the thread title to include "Spacecraft"; otherwise, it's a very generic question.

  • Great, thanks @uncledave . I'll look into these various options and report my findings, so that it hopefully helps someone asking a similar question in the future.

I was actually trying to understand this yesterday too.

If you look in Files at the size of an AUM project that is just Spacecraftit is small…even if the referenced audio file is long…the same for spacecraft presets in AUM.

It looks like Spacecraft uses shared storage for the app and AU. The OS keeps such shared folders hidden.

To delete the audio files, use Spacecraft’s file manager. You can also save and export spacecraft project files that include the audio.
