Hardware: MC707 or Circuit Tracks + Circuit Rhythm

In the next month I will finally have some spare cash for some hardware.

I have narrowed it down to either the Roland MC707 or the two new Novation Circuits and plus maybe a Roland JD08 or other compact synth around the £300 mark to go with the circuits.

I have watched close to 300 YouTube videos on these products now and still can't make up my mind. Either choice have positives and negatives and I am pretty sure I know many of them now.

Travelling to try them is not an option, so I'm probably going to procrastinate for some time yet, as I will probably not be in the position to buy anything for this hobby again in the near future.

Anyone who has used these items that would like to leave their opinions to add fuel to my befuddled brain is quite welcome.

My thoughts so far:

MC707 - decent sound engine. Decent i/o. Useful faders and knobs. Roland updates the product. Good all round hub for dawless set up to possible small add ons in the future. Some Roland quirks and idiosyncrasies. Does most things decently well if not a master of any particular feature. About £820.

Circuits - complement each other well. Would still be able to use if electric went out and portable use. Simple workflows, maybe too simple. They seem to lack more features than the Roland, yet seem to have a simplicity of use and fun factor. About £640 for both so some money towards an add on mini synth to go with them.

  • You can get a bird cord to power the 707 with a battery bank, so portable power if you lose electricity is not an issue. Having used all these boxes I would vote 707 easily. Great sounds, very powerful synth you don’t need a computer to edit, way more polyphony, excellent effects, and you can use it as a hardware mixer to some extent too.

  • I had a Circuit Tracks. Sold it to get an MC707. No regrets. It’s awesome.
