Sorry For The First 2 Of My Million Newbie Questions
I'm a nearly 20 year (desktop) veteran of the KVR forum. Just found you guys and am very happy to be here. I'll try not to ask stupid questions. I'm not saying I won't, but when I do, at least you'll know I TRIED. Q0: Did I post in the right forum?
Q1: Do the samples from apps get loaded into RAM? Just bought Splat To Clat and it is prompting me to choose a download folder. Q1A: Does it matter whether I download them onto a flash drive or an SSD or the internal HD? I don't care if they take time to load, but taking time for them to PLAY, well, we ALL care about that.
I bought one of those dongles for my iPad MINI 6 that adds a headphone jack, USB C for charging, USB C for data, USB A (currently in use by my controller), and 2 different SD card sizes slots. Oh, and an HDMI port I'll probably never use. Q2: If you were me and you wanted to expand storage but keep things compact, would you use a thumb drive, an SD card, or suck up the size difference and get an SSD drive? I'm really trying to create audio and MIDI tracks that I'll transfer to the desktop, so I AM trying to keep software and hardware minimal. YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE HOW THAT IS GOING.

It gets loaded into the iPad storage. 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, etc To verify, go to Setttings/General/iPhone or iPad storage.
It’s hard to expand storage on the iPad. Usually, you get what you get. I usually back up my photos, videos, audio files, and uninstall any unused apps.
Nowadays I tell everyone to get a device that’s at least 128GB. Or in the worst case, get the 99c iCloud with 50GB storage.
Hope this helps. Feel free to check out, and support my content over at...

Many find writing to SD cards from iOS unreliable. It is also super slow. SSD drives seem more reliable for writing and faster.
Thanks, everyone. I waited and waited to get into the iPad music-making world, and debated and debated before purchasing. Within a day of getting my iPad, I wished I'd gone 256! Live and learn!
Definitely guys, go for as much internal storage as possible. I am currently in a situation when I need to upgrade a 64GB device that is perfectly ok in terms of computing power but lacks storage to hold all the sample filled apps.
@TheHewitt data transfer to sdcards is super slow. Just test it and compare to ssd and the choice would be obvious to you![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
Also, be careful if you are using one of the USB hubs that sits flush with your iPad. There have been a few horror stories such as this https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/44120/just-killed-another-ipad-pro-looks-like-usb-hub-power-bankrolled-it-what-do-i-do/p1 where hubs of this type were involved.
Welcome to the world of iOS/iPadOS music! (I too was a KVR forum/desktop guy forever. Still am I think!)
When I was using my previous iPad, a 2018 64GB iPad Pro, I used a HyperDrive usb hub which had an SD card slot that worked _Okaaay.. but once I had the chance, I upgraded to a new iPad Pro with a terabyte of storage and never looked back.
Thank you, folks, for your generosity of time and wisdom. Thank you for making me feel so welcome!
I had seen the MINI 6 64Gb go down to $399 on Amazon (I recently needed to start wearing readers so I wasn't worried about the smaller screen), but I was waiting for the 10th gen Standard to come out because if the leaked specs matched the gen 9 price, hot damn! Well, we all know how that turned out... Then when the MINI 6 went on sale AGAIN for $399 I thought, this is it, I have another chance! And THEN, genius that I am, I started weighing the additional cost of the latest Air in exchange for a slightly larger screen, when I should have been weighing the cost of the larger drive on the MINI (I went for neither). Mind you, I'm still testing the waters on using the iPAD at all after 29 years on the desktop (I think I started using Cakewalk around '93 when that was the program and 12 Tone Systems was the manufacturer). And I'm still just looking to make some parts I can move to the desktop for further furtherance. If I can really fly with it, maybe I can either upgrade to a larger drive or go for a setup with more than one iPad like some of you maniacs!
Have fun with it! What kinds of music do you make? And which apps are you thinking of using on your iPad??
Thanks for asking! I've been a singer/songwriter forever. I write very literate and moody songs. Because I am not getting any younger, and because I've had cancer twice in the last 3 years (I'm currently fine), and because I am a caregiver to my beautiful partner who has MS, I wanted to try something more portable that would not keep me tied to the desktop. If I can sit with her in bed while we normally just stream shows and still be productive, that would be such a huge thing for me.
As a live performer I was a coffehouse guy with an acoustic guitar. But the music I love has a lot more mystery to it than that. My favorite band of the 20th century is The Cure, and my favorite of the 21st is Bombay Bicycle Club (I guess I like weird singers!) So I'm actually turning to the production style of beatmakers. They work fast, and the music can be very atmospheric and beautiful but still be dirty, gritty, and bouncy. I love all the stuff that's going on with lo-fi hip-hop. It is absolutely fascinating to me that you can turn on one of those study beats YouTube streams and not really worry about who the artist is. You catch a vibe and that's all you need.
I don't have a "host" yet. Obviously Garage Band is free, so I'm looking into the pluses and minuses of that. Cubasis 3 looks the most like a traditional DAW. But I've gotten a few suggestions for things like AUM that I'm trying to listen to (the suggestions, that is) despite not really understanding how they work. Because what if I could surprise myself? But I tried watching a Soundtestroom video for AUM, and he spent 20 minutes setting up Fugue Machine and Riffer to all play on like 8 separate channels and when he finally pressed play it was, um, underwhelming.
I bought Splat To Clat because I love that sound and OMG IT'S $7.99 FOR iOS AND THE VST IS $150!!! I'm trying not to let that happen too much but I'm guessing it's a pretty standard reaction for us desktop users. I also bought LoFi Tape and the expansion because the Soundtestroom guy did an amazing demo of it. Sitala is my favorite drum program on the desktop, so that seems like a no-brainer. ChordJam is what I was eyeing for a one-finger chord type-deal.
I'd basically be open to ANY one finger chorder apps, but the sea of choices is a bit daunting. I also would love a really simple sampler that just takes a one shot and maps it across the enitre keyboard. There's one in Garage Band, but I haven't loaded any of my own one shots onto the iPad yet, and the 5 samples that come with GB are like, children screaming or laughing and are not musical at all.
So that's me! What kind of music do you make? Which apps are you using?
At the risk of coming across as self promoting 😂 (see recent thread) I have a 1 hr walkthrough on aum that has been pretty well received and widely viewed. It might help you decide to go down the AUM route:
Or not, which is totally fine too. Lots of beats people like Beatmaker so that might be more your cup of tea. Welcome to iOS, and to this, mostly, lovely forum.
Thank you, Gavinski! I am depending on the kindness of strangers for information, so I'm grateful and I plan on watching the walkthrough.
Feel free to ask if you have any questions. We all depend on the kindness of strangers and I for one am grateful to the many people here who know a lot more than I do, and have shared it here over the years.
@TheHewitt For a "one finger chord" app, I would recommend taking a look at ChordPolyPad, and Audanika.
We meet again! Thank you kindly.
