What Do I Know? - Guitar-based Indie Rock

This one is 90% guitar with the addition of some synth pads in the quieter sections. Tracked and mixed in Auria. Lyrics in the spoiler:

This is where you and me
Debate the things that ought to be
This is where we talk about
All our fear and all our doubt

And all that you say
Is there’s nothing here to blind you
And all of my doubts
Are just begging me to find you

But what do I know anyway
Who do I think I can sway
There’s nothing but uncertainty
And thoughts that turn to doubt

Well I can’t see the light
When I’m fumbling in the night
And the stars are all out
With my fears

And if I said I could be wrong
But one more thought will come along
And maybe it will strike a chord
Or one more dud to be ignored

And all of our hopes
Are just flotsam on the ocean
With all of our fears
And our negative emotion

But what do I know anyway
Who do I think I can sway
There’s nothing but uncertainty
And thoughts that turn to doubt

Well I can’t see the light
When I’m fumbling in the night
And the stars are all out
With my fears

And I don’t know if I’ll come to forgive you
And I don’t if I will follow you

We disappear into the air
The wind scatters the dreams we share
We disappear into the breeze
We float adrift like autumn leaves

  • Sounds super clean, great voice, good job!

  • really nice Richard! i really enjoyed that listen. lyrics are great and awesome production.

  • +1

    Stadium material, skipper.

  • Wow, Richard, it is a gorgeous track that instantly reached my top 5 of yours ! You put a lot of thinking and work into this !
Like I told you on your previous song from last month, I really appreciate how you have been refining your guitars recently (both sound wise and playing). You put your pedalboard to good use.
The slow attack guitar is extremely well thought. I like the grain of the saturation too. And the effects at the beginning of the outro are also beautiful.

The lyrics are some of your strongest to date, IMO, and I like your vocals rendition and production (I really love the reverb on vocals, it feels like there is some kind of ducking on it, what reverb did you use?).

Drums sounds great, are your still using GarageBand ? You went pretty heavy on the snare !

The synth pad used are also extremely beautiful, I especially like the one that can be heard soon after the first chorus, it seems like some kind of womanish vocals pad, it's great, would like to know what you used too.
The outro is splendid, perfect length with a nice build up, the treatment on the vocals is top notch and sounds to me slightly different from the main vocals. But more importantly, the outro serves the lyrics extremely well.

I love everything on this track ! (Sorry for the long post maybe I should have kept it for next month's SOTMC)

@JohnnyGoodyear SOTMC is 95 months in if you can believe that. And I've written over 100 songs along the way, hopefully they are sounding better than those original efforts back in 2015 :)

Thanks! Those intro swells are from a distortion pedal going into a reverb pedal, which creates the nice gritty texture.

I've been using DDMF MagicVerb on all my vocals since it was released - the chambers are excellent.

The drums were created in Nanostudio 2, using the Modern Folk Kit from Drum Drops in Slate. I also bought the Drumagog version of the same kit so that I could use that on the snare and toms in Auria to create more variety and round-robins which Slate doesn't support.

For this I used some samples from a pack called Echoes by Holly Drummond which I mangled in Obsidian. I use this pack a lot :)

The outro vocals have some additional delay from Timeless to make them a bit more distant and dreamy sounding.

Thanks for the encouraging feedback and the close listening, much appreciated.

  • I didn't recognize the modern folk which I own as multi velocity sample which I usually load in Auria's sampler.
Lately I have been using a lot their 1970 Slingerland rock kit. The demos on their website doesn't do it justice IMO. Don't know if you own it, but I am sure you could do great things with it.

I definitely have to get DDMF magic. It has a very specific sound I am after, really close to what Nigel Godrich sometimes users on T. Yorke's vocals. It sounds more like an instrument than an effect.

Just listened to your track again, it is really great! Amazing job !

And I highly recommend DDMF MagicVerb, the best reverb on vocals bar none. The chambers are very probably sampled from the classic Capitol Records chambers below the car park.

    Hi @richardyot ,
    Lovely guitar track.
I love how mellow your vocals come in on this song.
The beat is very hip, and I can see this song being performed in a huge stadium.
Truly, a beautiful composition, and I am enjoying this song immensely!!!

Great track Richard! 👏👏🙌. Very interesting to read the details, the reverb indeed sounds great, very natural. And the drum sounds really organic and “real”. Do you sequence in Auria?. Finger drum or piano roll?. I bought the KrautRock kit from Drum Drops, love it, just the 3-vel pack which I find enough.
What if I get the same kit as you and @JanKun?. It’ll feel like we’re all hiring the same studio drummer, like in Motown era!. Nice one!.

Right, so I’m gonna get the same reverb as you, same drums as you… 😂
I’m intrigued by this MagicVerb… looks hippy and cool. I like reverbs that either sound weird or extremely natural. I guess I like reverbs that you can’t hear per se but that place instruments on a space… I do like the reverb sound on Richards track although I don’t use as much,
Been just watching a YouTube video on MagicVerb and it reinforces the fact that I’m shit at reverbs. I can’t hear the difference, or I can but don’t know if I like it better or not. So I might just trust you guys and get this one, because if I’m not gonna notice at least the graphics on this are really, really nice.

Thanks for listening! The drums are actually sequenced in Nanostudio 2, finger drumming in Slate. I've built a whole bunch of drumkits for Slate, and it's great because it has velocity on the Y axis so you can create a lot of natural variation when you finger drum. Plus NS2 has the best sequencer, so it's a really nice workflow. To get the audio in I use 4pockets Multitrack, so that I can hear the guitars in sync with the drums.

If I need more variation on the drums, especially the snare, I might do some drum replacement in Auria using Drumagog.

The thing that's great about Magicverb is that the chambers are sampled IRs, very likely from the ones undeground at Capitol Studios in LA. Reverb chambers such as the ones at Capitol or Abbey road have a really special sound: dense reflections but in a smallish and complex space - it's a sound that is very difficult to reproduce with pure algorithmic reverbs, so MagicVerb is pretty unique on iOS for providing these IRs of classic reverb chambers that were used on countless famous records from the 60s.

Altispace is very different in that most of the IRs that come with it are derived from classic digital equipment (from EMT and Lexicon etc) whereas the IRs in Magicverb are derived from real physical spaces, so obviously they represent very different sounds and different vibes.

Thanks! That B chord is just a slide up from the A minor (well spotted though, you've got great ears), so it's nothing special, but I guess it does spice up what would otherwise be a very ordinary chord progression.

I do often add harmonies to my own vocals, but this time I thought it sounded more intense without the lower harmony in the chorus. I did record the lower harmony, but decided against using it.

Right. Thanks for the info. I have AltiSpace2 which is also IR based and has a ton of presets. How would it compare?.

Altispace is very different in that most of the IRs that come with it are derived from classic digital equipment (from EMT and Lexicon etc) whereas the IRs in Magicverb are derived from real physical spaces, so obviously they represent very different sounds and different vibes.

Magicverb is Indeed magical. Very simple control and straightforward but It does something which I couldn't find with any other reverbs. For years I was looking to achieve something similar to the very dense reverbs Nigel Godrich applied on Thom Yorke vocals especially on In Rainbows. I am far from being an expert, but to my ears, Magicverb can get pretty close to this. Without hesitation, my best purchase for this year's black Friday.

  • Excellent song and production @richardyot, thanks for sharing!

(You also made me buy another reverb app I probably don't need, but it does sound so good!)

Thanks, and sorry about the reverb but at least it’s on sale right now 😉
