AASampler first go: Circle Of Protection

“ When the awful name… was uttered, the hideous change began. It was not merely a dissolution, but rather a transformation or recapitulation; and Willett shut his eyes lest he faint before the rest of the incantation could be pronounced.” - H.P. Lovecraft, The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward

Practitioners of ritual magic use circles of protection, marked out in chalk, salt, or in extremis, merely visualised, as psychic self defence, and to contain and focus magical energies. It is said to be hazardous to break a circle before a ritual concludes.

Drone piece created using loops I previously made in DrumJam for something else entirely. Three instances of AASampler, and two loops of that recorded and varispeeded in AUM. Sequencing by ShiftBud, Aphelian, and Cykle, Mastering: Bark Filter, FAC Bandit, Alteza. Mixed live and recorded direct into AudioShare from AUM.

I can see me using AAsampler a lot, for its immediacy and simplicity. I’m both lazy and easily distracted, so loading up a more feature rich sampler like Koala has a tendency to take me down rabbit holes away from my original inspiration. This just - works. Probably of less interest to the actually musically talented, who won’t enjoy the chipmunking etcetera, but I can live with it :)

As usual, any thoughts appreciated… Enjoy! :)

  • Love that style of music.
    Was reading (again) the case of Charles Dexter Ward while playing this sound (and others from your YouTube channel). Fits GREAT.

  • Very nice, Irena, have you come across any good, free lovecroft audio readings? Strikes me as something that would make nice adult bedtime story material!

  • Great stuff, really enjoyed!

  • Well… what an atmosphere! And I ended up buying AA half way through…

    I’m not a huge sample user, not on principle, but because I find them fiddly and not straightforward to use. So while I’m impressed with Koala, I hardly use it. Something this simple may be just what I need. And you can’t really argue with the price.

    So much for being restrained this year in the run up to BF. I’ve bought more apps this week than I have in months! 🙄

  • Very interesting atmospheric feel, very cinematic.
    This would be a tremendous force of protective envelope, a safe haven for the people.
    I feel safe, but still the aura of black magic is darkening the field.
    Well done.

    @jo92346 : when is the right time to read CDW again? The correct answer, of course, is any time… :) It makes my heart leap to think I might actually have soundtracked a reading of that great story, thank you.

    @Pxlhg : thank you!

    @Gavinski : DM’d

    @id_23 : thanks for the listen, and the comment. It is nice to be appreciated :)

    @bygjohn : yep, you really can’t knock it for the price, and it really does do (and just does) exactly what it says on the tin. If even Koala is too much of a stretch when inspiration strikes, AAS (- really? Ok) has your ass covered. Oh, please yourselves. I thought it was funny… ;)

    @ReneAsologuitar : thank you, your comments are always appreciated. Yes, circles of protection. Handy in a pinch. But only if Colonel 1911 lets you down, as my old spirit-plain sensei used to say. Before that 9th level Baron of Hell took him down during the nasty business at Arles…

    :) But seriously folks - thanks all for the listens, and the comments. It does make it worthwhile.

  • So often, music of this ilk is, shall we say, somewhat unsubtle.

    Not a problem here.

    Alluring and enticing to the max.

  • Sounds like a fantastic horror movie soundtrack.

    I've been listening to the radio play of that on BBC Sounds app, on Svetlovska's recommendation, if you have access to Sounds, it is truly a treat! Episode 1 here:

  • I think a person with no knowledge of the original material would greatly enjoy it. But if you are also a fan of the original 1920s texts and HPLs um, distinctive style, then the pleasure is increased, as you see how cleverly the makers have updated his stuff for the 21st century. It’s all the good bits, plus more, and now - with no racism! ;)

  • Great stuff, inner space, outer space, great crystals forming in chasms of dust... I'll have a listen to those radio plays too!

    I’ll think you’ll like them. As someone who dabbles occasionally in fiction writing, I saw them as a master class in adapting historical material to a modern relevance, without doing violence to the unique atmosphere of the original.

  • Does this sampler have a prelisten? Or am I just not able to find it?🤔

  • awesome. love it

  • I was discussing your creations with one of the new hires at work.She said it sounded like just her thing. I didn’t have a good way to point her to your music at the time but come Monday you’ll have another listener.
    Enjoyed this one too.

    Would it be hazardous to stop listening to this before it was completely finished? Not that I would or did.. I couldn’t because it was so intriguing.. listening for what’s around the corner.. not knowing what was coming next.. that really is a wonderful experience.. where you just can’t predict the next move.. Thoroughly enjoyed that.. thanks for sharing..
