Nole's Patrol

Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were, but without it we go nowhere.

Synopsis:
Nole loved his job checking the various systems sustaining the flora and fauna on the jungle moon.
The gentle luminescence of the flora had a ghostly beauty at dusk and he wondered what it must look like to the passing traffic above.
He preferred to go about his tasks in a more unhurried fashion, pausing occasionally during his patrol to take in the wonder of it all.
While some would have been perturbed by the ever present hum of machinery juxtaposed with the primal natural rhythms, their symbiosis felt reassuring, and he cherished the tranquil space it provided for him to contemplate his infinitesimally small yet precious and unique part in the cosmic symphony of life.

Creative Notes:
I love going for a walk in nature, and I wanted to capture the feeling I have when I'm walking, listening to the wildlife, hearing the ground under my feet, and the random interactions that occur along the way.

Because I have an addiction to buying synth and effect auV3s this became a sci-fi project with nearly 100 AUM nodes and some interesting Mozaic scripts :-)

Nole's heartbeat (sampled from a MiniMoog auv3 and looped in Enso) is the only constant element. His breathing are samples of myself, heavily processed, and triggered via Mozaic with some randomisation around timing of each breath.

Nole's footsteps and keypresses on his data pad are samples in Audiolayer triggered via a Mozaic script, and he never walks the same walk. The number of footsteps are randomised and the type of ground he walks changes occasionally, as does the weather. Sometimes he takes a quick look at his data pad, other times he presses more buttons to deep dive into the data.
Nole's data pad also logs thoughts and activities as he wanders along.

Overhead futuristic traffic (samples in Audiolayer) gets triggered randomly via a Mozaic script with a slow LFO on Pan. There is both background and transient environmental ambience (samples in Audiolayer) triggered randomly by Mozaic.

The drones are evolving synth notes from Pipa, Synthmaster One, and Animoog Z.

Musical ambience (other than the drones) is provided by some pentatonic chimes from Rosetta Particles, and a Mozaic script generating random sequences of fifth chords on the major scale that always resolve to root or fifth.

Production notes:
Capturing the essence of Nole's patrol for Soundcloud wasn't easy as it's a snapshot of an ever changing world, and one that I can easily spend hours immersed in.

I started by grouping all AUM channels into 8 mix busses with Midi-mixer providing the initial fade ins, and then I recorded each mix bus into Cubasis via IAA.

In Cubasis I then added Mononoke with sequences I'd prototyped in AUM and a few additional minor performance elements. Mononoke was super difficult to work with due to Cubasis pitchbend editing capabilities, and I used NA Tuner to get close to the notes I wanted!

  • Very nice atmosphere. I wouldn't comply if it was longer...

  • Thanks Jo, love your (longer) work. While the underlying 'engine' can run for hours in AUM, I still find it necessary to put some kind of melodic phrasing over the top. I wish I could break free of that like you and some others here do and rely more on shifting tones and layers of ambience.
I'm going to continue to evolve the many Mozaic scripts underneath it though and may publish more 'walks' in the future.

  • that is another music making process that I totally don't get. Sounds like magic to me. But the end result is great.

  • Quite an extraordinary creation you’ve made here. Your music perfectly builds around the story to create a wonderful atmosphere.

  • Very creative work here.
The hypnosis is very original and interesting.
    Love this work.

  • Loved that one. Beautiful atmosphere. Nice Owl at 2:20 🦉+ the overhead ships were a great touch 🛸

  • Thanks all for the feedback and encouragement. I've jotted down "more owls" so will see where that leads...
