SQ-80 for iPhone, suggestions?

Hey, what apps emulate SQ80 for iPhone?

Comments

  • You could start by downloading the SQ80 factory ROM samples.
    http://www.buchty.net/ensoniq/files/the_waves.zip

After that pick any synth that is capable of importing samples and re-create the patches.
Suggestions could be AudioLayer, Drambo, SunVox, SynthMaster 2 etc. etc.

The synthesis architecture of the SQ80 is pretty simple so the 'sound' has more to do with the original waveforms and DAC of the hardware.

But there are no 'pre cooked' solutions for iOS as far as I know.
    Good Luck!

Not to forget the extensive modulation capabilities and the analog filter of the SQ80.
Drambo seems to be the most capable basis for recreation.

    I've enjoyed listening to

That would be a nice project for the x-mas season!

If anyone wants to take the time to re-make a few favorite presets, I'd suggest to download the Arturia SQ80 demo which already helps a lot in 'dissecting' the sounds into their components.
Should Drambo be the choice (and it works well in iPhone), I'd recommend to put it into an instrument rack so presets can be switched more easily.

  • Thank you @Samu , these Waveforms are nice to use in Drambo for example.
Do you know any other such useful samples beside of galbanum WT ? Less is better for me, but still there is interesting from my side to at least ask… 🫣

Well, for actual wavetables I find that all the wave effects available in Drambos WT oscillator with some modulation are more than enough to shape the simplest waveforms into just about anything. For regular samples I tend to stick to my own SY85 samples as raw material to keep things simple.

Again thank you for sharing your personal way. Somehow Im very close to this in meaning „less is easier to control”, and I have also some custom prepared samples synths, voices and drum/bass multitrack. It is still a lot to eliminate, but did you remember my big LoopyPro project wchich consist over 4 GB of loops? Now it is less than 20, and 20MB in size. It took months to try and hear, using Multiband compression as helper tool in different configurations…. Shortening story, Im very happy from all of this Tools like Drambo, Mirack, LoopyPro and other auv3/iaa plugs, even If they are too heavy on CPU/memory, at least they allow to learn how to be outside kind of obsession-to-use-all. Yes, I had such bad habit and it was pain. Now I find better pleasure in playing than programming. But still programming/preparing sounds is part of music palette, especially if we internally need to hear something new. We are not automate machines, we are humans, and every moment is different. So less is easier to control in now.I know, long story , but I wanted to keep it short, simultaneously I hope my message will inspire somebody, like @Samu inspired me somehow. 🫡

I really loved SQ8L vst back in the days and often looked for similar sounds. I find that Sugar bytes Factory can get me the same feeling when constructing sounds from scratch. Sure it's just another wave table synth but it's easy and offers plenty of options, much quickly than drambo IMHO. Even using just the provided wave table can take you a long way.

  • Would be somehow nice to have ensoniq DP4 auv3 kind of effect.
But…. nowadays we have even more versatile effects and sounds, than in 90’s.

I'd take a closer look at the ChowDSPs BYOD. It's free and the optional IAPs are for specialty use cases as far as I see it.
    https://apps.apple.com/app/id1595313287

What the DP4 shined at was the routing and parallel use of effects (4 mono or 2 stereo) in serial or parallel configuration.

As long as the order of effects can freely be changed in the host it should be possible to re-create most of the effects. I have TOO MANY effects already so it's more a matter of using what I already have in more creative ways by adding stuff (filters, decimators, saturators etc.) between, before or after each of effects. (Drambo shines here too).

Sure it's a hassle to manually re-create the effect chains compared to browsing thru presets with pre-set configurations but it can be done and it's a fun learning process to boot!

Doug from @thesoundtestroom has made a pretty in-depth video on BYOD (older version than the current).

Yonac's ToneStack Pro (with the IAPs) also provides a load of effects and room for experimentation.
And Virsyn's 'classic' AudioEffx is still quite good (very old video from Synthanatomy).

And yeah, as a now recovered former App-o-Holic I have every single app mentioned above LOL.

The key here is experiment, experiment, experiment and when you get stuck we're all here :sunglasses:

    Cheers!
