Device Advice: Inflation, ipad pros, headphone jacks
I'm trying to decide between getting a new m1 pro, a regular 2022, or just holding onto my old 2017 (or using my work 2019 iPad and holding out). Inflation, hd space, and cpu sluggishness are my main driving factors for considering a new device. Lack of headphone jack, crazy cost for HD space, and the seemingly underutilized m1 chip (for music) keep me from the pro. The potential lack of staying power keeps me from feeling solid on the 2022.
More context:
I currently have an iPad pro 2017 that I use for music and an iPad 2019 for work. I like the pro for the speakers but the 2019 can load a couple more apps in aum, generally.
I've been holding off on a new iPad mostly be because I don't want to lose the jack and because I've kind of enjoyed finding cpu workarounds (lots of sunvox and poison). But I'm definitely feeling the cpu... If I load frms or animoog z with any type of complex patch plus polyphony, I can't do much else on the complex side.
With inflation, prices are going to be worse soon and I'm trying to figure out whether now is the time to upgrade... And if so, whether to just get the 2022 with 256gb or splurge on an m1 with either 512gb or 1tb (again, with the m1 also trying to balance the cost with the constant hd space struggle... Don't want to feel hobbled by hd space in 3 years if I blow a wad on the m1... Also don't want to feel like a standard 2022 is filled up and slow in 3 years).
I've seen different threads on this topic but wanted to post now since I bet others are in the same boat around this cyber Monday.

I’m going from a 512gb 2017 10.5 inch Pro to a 1tb 12.5 M1. I was going to get the M2 originally but that model is now £600 more than last year’s model in the UK, so I found the M1 at John Lewis on sale and went for that.
Storage really depends on how many apps you have and also how many samples you store on the device. I have a lot of samples so I really need the storage but YMMV. I’d like to hang on to the new device for a few years so 1tb is insurance against running out of space.
Thanks for the insight. How many gigs of samples do you generally have on your device?
And what made you think m1 vs base model? I've read that ppl still aren't feeling the speed upgrade much, and while I expect that to change as apps evolve, I'm not sure that the game will change so much that an m1 will really make a huge difference until apps start taking full advantage of the chips. But again, I don't know much here and am just sharing my impressions.
@MFBT Apple increased all the prices quite recently, so we are all a bit late with upgrading. Before going ipad I recommend you to first check it out in real life. It has non laminated display. May feel a bit low budget, but that's probably a matter of personal preference.
What I suggest you (and this you probably didn't take under consideration) is getting a second hand pro because of
I just recently upgraded mini by grabbing a second hand air. I am very happy with the sound quality from the speakers but I am a bit disappointed that apple doesn't include stage manager for this device. Now I am wondering how life would look like when switching to a pro (for all mentioned above pros)
Storage is one of my main priorities, and oinly the Pro devices are avaiable with more than 256GB, so for me personally the Air and the base iPad are not suitable.
I have around 20GB of samples in my Audioshare folder, around 30GB of Slate and Obsidian home-made instruments in NS2, and my Auria folder is at around 60GB.
