I’ve forever used a set of drum machine samples that I got on an Amiga disk in 1993 from a market stall in Preston. They’re basic as eff bit so the trick for my taste. I’ve tried tons of other packs over the years but go back to them again and again as I know what to expect and can effect or twist them into whatever my simple needs are. I usually use three of the five that are in the Korg DR55 folder, but these days tend to use drambo with either a distorted sine wave and AD amp envelope, or filtered noise through the same 😂
Unreconstructed basic me 😅
Well since Drambo was mentioned, have you tried using a graphic envelope to 'shape' the drum sound?
ie. Graphic Envelope + Sampler + Amp and modulate the amp level with the Graphic Envelope.
Or maybe control the shaper with graphical envelope for precise control of the clipping over time etc?
It's a fun playground for sure...
Yeah totally, it’s way more rewarding than searching through hundreds of similarly named files for me, and automatable as well 🖖
Yeah, especially if/when you know what is needed and how to do it
So much fun to be had it's nuts!
It's one app that I really wish could get the backing to be better developed. I really don't have time to waste with things that are so buggy. I used to use AudioLayer for my imported felt pianos, but that was quite tedious in it's own way, and the interface was so unappealing — as a trained (and former) artist and designer, interfaces and aesthetics in music software is important to me, although the sound always comes first.
And mental that it runs in portrait on my ancient iPhone, all that fun ergonomically in your pocket!
Good and beautiful design is extremely important to me too, hence my love of those sqsl sequencers despite their lack of a few features that are normally very important to me.
That's exactly the point. I simply don't want to pay for poor design, even when the engineering is good. Yes, engineering first, but interface is essential, and can be inspirational. I previously trained as an electronic product designer, so I know all about the values of each, and the need to bring them together in unison for the best outcome. I wish someone would do this with Koala. So well engineered, so powerful, so unappealing. I do use it though, because I can't find a better designed alternative.
Taste differs I know...
...personally I love Koala look & feel just the way it is.
Also I prefer to use Koala in Portrait mode as the sample-editor is a bit bigger and the pads keep their 4x4 layout which is way better for finger drumming than 8x2.
Then again maybe I'm nuts as I happen to love SunVox just the way it is too...
@Samu , it's all a matter of personal taste, for sure. Like so many things. 😊
i posted this at the beginning of the thread, but am posting again to share this treasure trove with others!

its an insane amount of samples, covering literally everything. High quality too. nothing is too over-processed, unless its done intentionally. Like actual useable kicks and snares etc that arent squashed to shit. Incredible melodic content as well. Tons of ambient, FX, glitches, etc etc etc.
Royalty free, and FREE!
The Music Radar free samples are very good as re the Reverb drum machine collection, which is free as well.
I've got a lot of the Sample Fodder thread that's kept here as well, lots of good stuff.
One of my favourites though is:
https://samples.kb6.de/downloads.php
It's a HUGE collection of drum machine samples from a guy in Denmark who has really put the time in. They're "free" although he asks for a donation because of the sites bandwidth, etc. You can leave just a dollar/euro and you'll get access to everything the site has. It's more than worth it, even donating a fiver has you miles ahead on the deal.
Of course there are tons of duplicates if you have the Reverb or Radar drum machine collections but I've found it's worth checking all three because many times the sample quality will be better on kb6 samples.
I somehow missed this thread first time round so I thank the contributions made last year, etc. I'm definitely checking them all out.
@JRSIV I've been looking for that site! Perfect timing mate!
@shinyisshiny Been looking for this site too! Again, perfect timing!
I just realised the only reason I've been keeping the multi-GB "Sounds of KSHMR" packs around is due to the epic orchestral drums, but I just realised I already have those in Module Pro (I think it's "KAPro Epic Drums"). So I did the craziest thing and deleted "Sounds of KSHMR" off of my iPad Mini. I can use the drums in the following paid-for packs for basic EDM fodder.
Since they are dry, minimally/not processed drums. I'll be milling through Music Radar in a bit, but first I need to download again the KB6 sounds. If I recall, I've paid a fiver for them several times in the past (each time I get a new device) in order to support the guy's hard work.
If you’ve paid before go back through your emails because I remember the KB6 site sends out your info and the collections password in an email. I’ve been guilty of using the same username and password on different sites, apps, etc but I’ve consciously been making up different usernames and passwords and then keeping a password vault app to have them if I forget. The KB6 site however sends you a username/password.
Thanks mate. I'll look it up.
