Speaker Monitors
Does anyone have any recommendations for monitors? There's a catch, they have be available from Target, I'm getting married and we're registered there. Here I am thinking we could only put towels and bed sheets, then my girlfriend says "you should put some nice headphones on there." So I did, the Sennheiser HD598s, and now I figure I might as well add some speakers. Here's a link, anyone see anything good for a simple iOS home studio?

Lol, my hi-fi has speakers that I found in a skip...
I tried looking through the first few pages and truthfully, I'd personally either try to get something that could be returned for cash and buy some nicer studio monitors at guitar center or other music shop OR just buy some shitty speakers and learn the hell out of em rather than having a really nice pair of $400 bose speakers. why?? because if you get a nice pair, your mixes will always sound like the greatest masterpieces made in the history of music but the moment you try to play that same mix on any other system, it will sound shit compared to your mixing environment. at least if you have a shitty pair of speakers, i you can make it sound good on them, they'll most likely sound greater on other systems. if you actually have extra money, i like the avantone mix cubes as theyre pretty neutral and as i mentioned earlier, if you can make a mix soun balanced on shitty speakers, theyll hopefully sound better on a better system. also AB your mixes constantly against songs you like the sound of.
i did my last band's album a few years back and spent a shitload of time thinking that i got the kick and bass to sit nicely with a bunch of guitars and everytime i listen to that cd, guess whats lacking, the kick and the bass sounds thin (well not that thin as i recorded to tape which added a bit of low end to it but thats another discussion) but the main reason for lack of kick, nice monitors which accentuated the low end too much. so it sounded great IN MY ROOM but on other systems, not so good. In cars where my friends have a good system or where the bass is naturally emphasized like many of the fancier headphones or speakers, sounds cool but in my opinion, i think a good producer is able to have a mix that translates well on all systems at various levels.
my two cents
oh and congratulations!
oh just to elaborate on what i meant by going to buy a pair of nice speakers at a music shop (if you get the cash) is theyd be more likely to have neutral sounding speakers than target where all the high end speakers will TRY to be emphasizing the highs and lows which will skew your mixing decisions
@gjcyrus Thanks for your input! I'm not so sure I'll throw monitors on there now... Maybe I will wait it out. My speakers now get a hum over 50% volume, it can be pretty annoying but not unworkable, a change definitely needs to happen sooner or later though.
