Can you "pencil" in notes on MPC Grid with piano keys?

Hi MPC folks,

I want to be in Pencil mode, pick a spot on the Grid, and use my piano keys to put the notes on the Grid. In other words, use the Pencil mode but not tap the touch screen to specify the notes. I know how to play and record in real time, but I'm talking about a different method.

Can we do anything like this?

Thanks,
Joe

P.S. I have Key 61, but my question would be the same with a separate MIDI keyboard.

FWIW, I found out answer to what I want is at the oddest MPC screen.

Hit the Overdub button, go to List Editor, and then hit your Keyboard note or chord. You can position to the bar and beat while on this screen, or from the Grid.

The List Editor screen has more secret powers I need to learn.

  • That's what the track sequencer inside Drambo does. You play a note or chord, then hit the step where it should be located. Or draw its length to define note length.
You can also hold a step and then play or experiment with different chords and the last one you've played will be stored on the step when you release it.
You can also edit (add/remove) individual notes in chords by enabling selection mode (the lasso symbol) and hitting a step which will allow you to toggle notes conveniently.

  • Nice!

It's been years since I messed around with trying to write anything on a proper musical score.

The freedom to not record in real-time to compose on a computer tool, play it, revise it, is a good thing.
