Lightning Interface that charges iPad

edited December 2022 in Hardware

Hi.
Is the preferred method now to use any interface onto a powered hub into a camera adapter. Usb for sync and spare lighting for charging?

Presonus have iOS compatible MFI direct to iPad usb ports. Was wondering if going from this to powered hub and single lightning cable into iPad cutting out camera adapter would work?

Cheers

Assuming u mean a non usb-c iPad, the apogee duet 2 charges the iPad and has a USB A port (for midi only)

Nope. That won't work. To use a hub you have to connect to its uplink or "host" port. That's not the same as the other ports that you would connect something like an audio interface to. In my experience, you can't power the iPad from that port, even with hubs that have the type of host port that supposedly deliver power. The best I've been able to do is use the CCK with USB connection running to the host port and a second lightning cable sending from a charging port on the hub to the lightning port on the CCK. That's two cables, but they can be zip tied together or something to reduce tangles.

Maybe there's some special hub out there that has a lightning to host port connection that can deliver power and data, but if there is I haven't found it.

  • Another one that works nicely is the Fucusrite iTrack Dock - if you can get your hands on a good second hand one, that is.

    I like that

Don’t get why it’s so hard to do
Currently using a line 6 spider v which connects directly to iPad and charges it too.
Just looking for a smaller option

I believe there are two reasons that make it hard to do. First, the maker has to implement the proprietary Apple Lightning interface, instead of just the standard USB. And they have to get Apple's permission to mark it "MFI'. Certainly, now that most Apple devices are USB-C, it may be a dead issue.

I used to use that with my Air 2, worked great and sounded great, unfortunately when I got my IPad Pro I was sol and had to buy another interface. I bought the Symphony Desktop but it doesn’t charge the IPad Pro, smh.
