Midi Sequencer Step input

Hi there,

i am looking for a Auv3 App, that is build up like the sequencer mode of the novation launchpad pro and with each pad midi assignable. (See )

In other words: I look for a midi step sequencer in step/grid view style with midi assignable steps.

Thanks a lot.

  • There is an Auv3 version

  • Stepbud, not a grid but a note each step, with sliders to change each note, can do cc too. Not sure how midi lean works here, maybe inside a host like AUM but not sure

You can easily make this with the AU Chord pads inside one of my favs Tonality. You can make custom note or chord blocks, in many different size, 4x4 9x9 etc… it doesn’t sequence then but it has midi learn to each pad so you can play and record the midi into a piano roll. I have a couple on Patchstorage. One is C2-c4 and the other is C3-C5.

Chord poly pad can do something very similar.

  • I’m pretty sure there is Mozaic script for that too. Actually several. Some you play, some sequence the notes.

Xequence AU Pads can be used for notes as well as drums.

Rozeta Cells has some shortcomings IMO, but also some really cool features.

SnakeBud also has some amazing features.

miRack's GridSeq is a good one if you can get your head around how to wire it up to clock and midi output.

The HypnoSequence Mozaic script has a different take, where you enter steps but then send send (any) midi notes to trigger the sequence steps as you feel like it. It's a fun way to decouple thinking about note values and rhythm. (miRack's sequencers can all be run this way too if you now how to hook them up).

  • I've stumbled over the "MIDI assignable steps" part.
Are you aiming for adding LP Pro 3 functionality to a classic Launchpad?

Yea there’s probably a couple buds that might be useful here. Polybud, melody bud, Arp bud 2.

Thanks a lot for your replies. I know some of the apps you mentioned and will check out the others.
Maybe some more words on what i want. I want to enter drum sequences in step view, using a midi controller. So a layout like the grid page in EG pulse, which is controllable without using the display.

Exactly. Either I want to buy the launchpad mini, or another idea is to use the the S and M rows of my nanocontrol 2
    which also makes 16 steps.

(I would also be ok with another display free step input, for example: cycling through the instruments (K, Sn, HH, OH,…) with one knob and trough the 16 steps with another one to select a point in the grid and than hit a pad when I want to enter the selected note. Controlling atom 2 in that way would be my dream.)

How do u enter midi drum grooves? via recording, or by step input to the display?

I'm totally fine with Drambo's multitrack step sequencer, it has a lot more buttons than any hardware controller, it can show more than 16 steps (or switch between different bars) and it shows a lot more information per step too:
Is it a note or a chord?
    What pitch?
    How long is the note?
    Which steps have p-locks?
All these things are unavailable on typical pad controllers.
And although I love the idea (got 2 Launchpad Minis here as well) and there are nice solutions for Ableton on desktop like https://motscousus.com/stuff/2011-07_Novation_Launchpad_Ableton_Live_Scripts/, I always come back to the touch screen as it's so much more fun to work with than with limited hardware.
But hey, that's a matter of taste of course.
