  • chowtape has all you need.

byod comes with some lofi IRs if you want more.

    both free

  • Yep Chowtape is hard to beat for dialing in whatever lo fi you want.

  • TB Reelbus. Don’t have that particular one, since I have several others. But I’ve heard many people rave about it. Especially on a master bus. Plus all TB apps are pretty great so you probably can’t go wrong there…

    Tape Cassette free
    Tape Cassette 2 free
Tape Cassette pro, Are all nice.

AU3FX Dub can do some decent tape stuff.

    Yup chowtape free, good option.

    Lo-fi-af too

Lo fly tape is just ok.

I’d try some of the free ones first to see if they meet your needs.

Ah, you've come to the right place. 😉

Lo-fi-af! It's basically Lofi crack high on acid, the Swiss army knife of Lofi plugins, and I've used it on my Lofi EP masters. 😂 This is the ultimate ruler of the Lofi universe. This video will help demystify it for you...

RX950 - To be placed at the start of any proper mastering chain. It's a ad/da converter emulation. I'm lazy and simply use the default preset.

    Honourable mentions -

-Needlepoint. If you're looking for the best vinyl emulation around, look no further than Needlepoint. Lo-fi-af has the ability to add vinyl crackle and warble and such in its analogue section, but Needlepoint has a few things Lo-fi-af doesn't.

-Chowtape. It's free! Its only drawback is the fact you need a sound science doctorate to fully understand deeply just what it can do, but honestly once you get the hang of it, it's just so good. I've used it on many of my Ambient experiments back in the summer. If you find yourself using it, shoot a few quid the developer's way via the IAP tipjar.

-DAW Cassette. Quick, fast, dirty way to get your sound sounding old. When I produced my first Lofi EP, I used it to get the "warble" effect. (Although now I use FLSM and use a pitch lfo in DirectWave and FLSM's other synths to emulate said warble effect.)

-TB Reelbus. I've found it to be a bit more subtle than other emulations, but god it has such a great sound!

    Avoid...

-Lo Fly Tape 1 AND 2 - I've tried to use it on my Dark Ambient experiments in the past, and it sucks. 😂 I mean, if someone else finds a good use for it, all the more power to them. All of this is subjective twaddle anyways, so grain of salt mate.

Non-oldifying plugins I highly recommend for Lofi production on a master track - MagicDeathEyeStereo for glue compression and cutting out low inaudible frequencies, NoLimits for easy limiting, TB Barricade for more precise limiting and polishing, and YouLean Loudness Meter to measure LuFS levels since NoLimits lacks an LuFS meter.

Now you're turn @Gusto . Tell me mate, what type of genre(s) are you looking to produce? 😃 I'm deathly curious.

Wow, that's a super comprehensive post @jwmmakerofmusic. I agree with you and @Poppadocrock about the Lo-Fly tape app. It is more for live performance, kind of like Turnado or the Koala fx. My big issue was the sound... Didnt sound great to my ears. As if I was listening to it through a very thin layer of plastic. It has some fun features for live managing though.

I think TB Reelbus is fantastic value. It's not just for taping cuz you can also be flanging or tape echoing with the app -- that functionality is on top of the standard tapey fx we expect to see.

You guys are saying “lo-fly tape”. I’m assuming you mean both Fly tape 2 and lo fly dirt. Both of which I find indispensable if you’re after replicating sp404 performance fx, or tone coloration akin to running your signal through iconic drum machines. Many producers go out of their way to run their drums/busses through 303s, 202s, mpc60s, SL1200s, SK-5 and other drum machines simply for the warmth and coloration. Heck, that’s why I’m in the market for a 202/303. It’s meant to be used sparingly. When mapped to a controller, you basically have a diet 404. Koala FX/LoFly/FlyTape are like the holy trinity m

Also, the new 45 Lo-Fi hip hop presets included in ChowTapeModel are fantastic.

Dustbin and the Lo-Fi IRS inside of BYOD can get you far for tone shaping

    PCM2612 for that retro decimation

Nembrini Lofi clipper has a saturation and distortion that both sound amazing to my ears

IMO, Lo-Fi af is a bit over the top, when I’m just trying to dial in some simple warble, noise, saturation, etc. several of the features I never envision myself using, like the digital skipping and mp3 settings.

Wait, ChowTape has 45 Lofi presets now?! Sheesh where is my head at? 😂 Under a rock apparently.

Ah Dustbin! I should make more use of that plugin.

Yes! They were made by Synthdrifter, they’re in the folder “Carter” Awesome that they are element specific (bass, kick, snare, etc)

  • ..can you believe this is a free app? Would normally be an €12 to €18 app for this quality.

The PCM 2612 from Inphonik (who also make RX950) is quite nice for a SP-1200 style crush and bite. I use it on a return in AUM and add little amounts to tracks this way. I think it sounds way better than the crush effect in Koala.

Those Inphonik plugins are like magic lofi fairy dust. I emailed him recently (to find out M1 status of RYM2612) and Mathieu said there is a new product dropping soon and that RYM2612 port to iOS is also in the works.

  • Fly Tape used to be my favorite, but then ChowTape and Unfiltered Audio's NeedlePoint and Lo-fi-af came out. Tape Cassette is also nice.

  • Anyone else have latency trouble with ChowTape? Stems bounced out of NS2 using ChowTape are always delayed by a few milliseconds …

  • I need to mess with chowtape more. Needlepoint has become one of my favorites though. It’s also a good source if you want just straight up vinyl sample fodder and the compressors it has are really fun to play with

Thanks for reaching out. I'm not using virtual instruments currently, but I'd still buy it to support the dev, I use RX950 a lot.
