Another year (LoFi)
Another year
It doesn't always need to be a big party, sometimes it's just another year.
Creative Notes
'Another year' is a creation that languished as a 8 bar piano chord loop in Atom2 in AUM for many months until @jwmmakerofmusic stimulated my interest in completing it through his awesome lofi exploration.
I've tried to replicate the familiar LofiGirl sound (this is my first attempt at it), as I wanted to have some affectionate fun with the genre.
So what better than to take a familiar happy tune, twist it around a bit, and turn it into Lofi?
Production Notes
After noodling around in AUM for ages I recreated the instrumentation in Cubasis and played or wrote in the MIDI. Swam Trumpet voiced the melody and a few found sounds from FreeSound provided the foley. I settled on Audiolayer and Numa Player for Strings, with Pure Piano providing the gently mutating chord sequence. I chose to keep the percussion snapped to grid, with some swinging hi hats the only deviation, instead allowing instrumentation to play more freely as I prefer it that way. I make no apologies for the Mark Trees as I love them for that extra sprinkle of cheesy goodness.

very cool birthday lofi remix
Really enjoyed this. Perfect as I look out at the first snow of the season.
Sometimes it's just another year.
Double post
I just noticed this now, lol. First of all, happy birthday if it is indeed your birthday.
Secondly, I absolutely adore this version of the happy birthday song. You did a great job.
Thirdly, I'm so touched that I inspired you mate. ❤️ That means so much.
Thanks all. Was not my birthday but good to have it on the playlist for the next quiet one.
A YouTube channel got in touch and offered me 'paid promotion' for it, so perhaps not to shabby for a first attempt.
I'm not sure the road to Coachella is paved with Happy Birthday remixes, but it was fun anyway, and I would never have finished it if not for folks here cranking out cool music the whole time!
That's incredible! I may have to release some of my EPs to SoundCloud. I haven't used SoundCloud in a while, lol.
Absolutely terrific! How’d you play the horn?
How did I play the horn? Probably badly :-)
It's a Swam Trumpet, slightly controlled with a Smoov compressor, then with Tape Cassette 2 and simple low and hi pass filters, then a moderate Black Hole reverb by Black Hole standards.
The playing technique was to first record the notes freely via Cubasis keyboard, then to slightly adjust volume and timing on a few rogue notes on the Midi roll.
Then I made a discovery. I found you can over dub the performance elements (vibrato, growl, expression etc...) by mapping them to CCs and then simply playing it through adjusting the performance elements in Swam trumpet on screen. You don't need to hit 'record', just ensure that 'W' is set on the channel. So I did a little of this too.
In the future I'll take this a little further using knobs / sliders on a hardware midi controller keyboard instead... but either way the 'W' overdub trick is a good one!
👍🏻 and thanks for the production details.
Excellent interpretation of a classic… some nice detail, liked the strings and the tinkly bits…
This is excellent. What apps did you use to get the lo-fi flavor?
Thanks @GeoTony and @Sabicas.
The lo-fi flavor is mainly provided through filtering high and low via eq, and saturation, for which I used the free Tape Cassette 2. Vinyl crackle is a looping sound from Freesound. I then used Electrogene (a frenzied black friday buy) 'CrunchyVibe' on the sub bass which i gently sidechained to the kick.
I had a lot of fun doing this one and might try some more lo-fi in 2023 :-)
Nice relaxing piece of LoFi. Sounds like the chilled aftermath of a really great birthday party!
Sounds great ! I use the same kind of workflow with SWAM apps to add extra level of realism. These apps are great !
Beautiful song. Love the strings!
