iPadOS 16 — safe to upgrade in older devices?

I am wondering how iPadOS is on an iPad 6 … particularly running legacy apps and IAA

I finally updated my iPad 6 a few days ago and it seems OK. Even a bit snappier in some user interactions. No problems with AUM, Audiobus, MIDI. I have not tried any IAA, since I don't use it very much.

  • How old is your device? I've updated my 2017 10.5 iPad Pro with no issues, it runs just as well as iOS 15 did.

  • I still use an iPad 5, have no problems.

  • All the IAA apps I have left (which includes all the Korg stuff and a few others) work just as well under iPadOS16 as they did on iPadOS15 as long as they are launched before making any connections to them and making sure background audio is enabled.

I do use some IAA apps, such as the Lumbeat apps, and the Korg apps, and they all work fine on iOS16.

  • Tx. Great to know.

  • So my aging Air 3 should be fine to update, too?

  • iPadOS16.2 just dropped so forget the 16.1.x builds :sunglasses:

    Yes I think so.

Thank you for the quick reply

  • 15.7.2 is also out for those on devices stuck at iOS15/iPadOS15...

  • iOS 16.2 working well so far. And GarageBand also had an update today.

  • I don’t like it. It totally broke my trackpad/mouse clicking in atom piano roll 2 and MTS. I now have to use workarounds in settings to make it work. Not worth the tradeoff to have stage manager for me.

Stage Manager can be turned off. But you also miss out on security updates if you don't upgrade iOS, so there is that.

My reference to stage manager isn't the ability to turn it on/off but the fact it's only on iPadOS 16, and wasn't worth the update for me having to loose mouse/trackpad clicking. Knowing that, I would've stayed on iPadOS 15.

Even more reason to stay on iPadOs 15 unless there's a specific iPadOS 16 exclusive feature u want

For me it is related to some apps that won’t make it to iPadOS 15. Fortunately, I don’t use a mouse with my iPad.

Is yours an issue with a particular trackpad/mouse or all?

Yes, that's a good point about losing your mouse and trackpad connection. Losing any part of one's workflow is not only annoying, it's time-consuming if there is no immediate alternative or fix.

It's every mouse/trackpad I've tried: Magic Keyboard Case, Logitech Combo Touch Case, Magic Trackpad (not case), Logitech Mouse.

Another thing, on the iPad M1 at least, the battery drain feels super fast. Every time I pick the thing up im loosing 30-40% on light music tasks. Felt like I didn't have to charge the thing this often on iPadOS 15. Maybe it'll affect u, maybe not.

Absolutely! It also makes it a nightmare when making video content/tutorials
