Syncing Koala Loops

I like to use loops of different lengths in Koala, for ambient stuff. But how do I get the pads to all start at exactly the same time? Is there a way to do that? Using the step sequencer would continually retriggerer them and effectively make them the same length. I just want them to start together, then go out of sync as they loop.

  • hahaha yeah that's the only way unless you rig something up using midi?

I’m thinking if I use something like Patternbud to set it off that might work? It’s a shame it doesn’t have the feature built in.

  • If you had Aum I think you would be able to set the pads you want to a key on the built in keyboard just use koalas midi learn thing… I haven’t tried though

  • ……. How is he getting that watch on?

  • I would imagine you could cook up something in Mozaic to trigger all the pads at once. Or an app that you can do a custom chord with all the pads as a chord?

Can you get a sequencer to play a mega chord with lots of notes and each note triggers a different pad in Koala?

This might be possible, but I’d have to stop the sequencer so’s it didn’t loop and retrigger the pads back into sync. If I stop the sequencer, will the pads keep playing?

I guess if you set the pads to "loop" in Koala when they are triggered once by the sequencer they will keep playing forever...?

can program the loops on sequencer to play at the same time, to sync them to the same tampo just use the time stretch feature and if you want them to stop playing when you press stop button, just turn off the oneshot feature for each loop !

    That’s what I’m hoping. I’ll give it a try!

I want the opposite of all these to happen 😄 I’m doing ambient, so I want them to start together, be at different tempos, go out of sync with each other, and keep playing when I press the stop button.

so there you go just do the opposite of all that, don't do the time stretch on non of them and don't turn off the oneshot feature,

  • I use an external sequencer to do this. The sequencers in GR-16 or Drambo work really well for it as you can have the step only trigger once and then the loops can just do their thing.

  • why don't u use AUM and load all the tracks? with File Player, you can play them directly, and maybe set a Master channel for FX's

Excellent! It’s a pity there’s not a simple feature in Koala itself, eh? Just a “link pad” option. Sort of the opposite of a choke group or mute group.

You don’t even need a sequencer. You could script Mozaic or streambyter to send multiple simultaneous note messages to koala at the tap of a pad of if triggered by an incoming note.

Can't you just midi map the pads to a one button on a controller or a key on the AUM keyboard?

Koala doesn't allow the same midi note to trigger multiple pads.

  • just trigger them all on one pattern and then switch to a blank pattern...

  • But maybe you could send the same note to two instances?
    Or two different midi channels?

Gotta try it after work now

That doesn’t work with the internal sequencer unfortunately

    oh they don't hold?

Nope, they only play if there’s a note drawn in. Would be great if they did.

Or the developer could script Koala to do the same thing internally 😄
