iPadOS 16.2 and External Monitors

Hi Gang

Proper external monitor support has finally come to iPadOS (again)! This has me wanting to trial a proper desktop style setup for my iPad Pro M1 11" that I can hook into when I want/need a bigger screen and/or multi screens. I am wondering if anyone is currently doing this and if so how they manage to have an external monitor hooked in along with an audio interface? I have a small powered usb hub as well as an Apple dongle with HDMI and USB out. Thanks for any help or advice!

yep doing just that. i’m using a pricey dell dock though. to support MOTU audio interface, NI MIDIKeyboard, Qwerty keyboard, trackpad and 32 inch monitor. (also webcam but iPadOS doesn’t yet support this)

Awesome! Thanks so much for confirming this works. I wonder if your Dell dock is the same that I use for my MacBook. Does it have integrated hdmi outputs?

@Cambler Tried this morning with a Bluetooth Keyboard and mouse and second HD TV 36 inch! Works ok had a few drop outs and funny instances switching apps.

Worse thing even with power cable to my powered hub connected it drains my 11inch iPad Pro M1 battery pretty quick so don’t think our be using it much. Just wanted to prove it works

    I have something like this
    https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwiL8fPm0fn7AhUPusgKHYMMDp8YABANGgJxdQ&ae=2&sig=AOD64_3RqV18n9esrP_oyP2d5tKIPTy_oQ&ctype=5&q=&ved=2ahUKEwj5s-vm0fn7AhUjmHIEHZzLCV8Qwg8oAHoECAMQGQ&nis=8&dct=1&adurl=

Keep in mind iPadOS only supports 1 external monitor.

You may need a higher wattage USB-C power adapter to power the hub and charge the iPad.

  • I've got one of these that I use with a Scarlett interface, a Behringer FCB1010, and a Nektar Impact GX Mini. I have a 65W charger plugged in to the PD port to keep the ipad charged. Only one HDMI out, though. I only tested it briefly with an external monitor but it worked well.

Ahh that's a great cheap alternative. So you're plugging in what is essentially a Macbook charger? I have mine lying around and never used as my Macbook is attached to my hub for charging. Thanks!

Thanks for that. I'm hoping any drop outs etc will be ironed out, although I assumed they already would have. I wonder if a higher watt power adapter would help with the drop outs?

  • @realdawei is your dock Thunderbolt? I just read something on Reddit that suggested the dock needs to be Thunderbolt otherwise external monitor will just mirror rather than extend?

My dock is thundebolt yes…however I don’t think that’s a requirement for extended display

Ok, thanks for that. Can I ask what model your dock is?

Just checked it’s the WD19TB that I linked to earlier. Be aware that it also has a headphone port. Which means it’s eligible to be the default when connecting to the iPad along with any headphone ports in the Display.

So part of the connection workflow is to turn the MOTU off and on again to get iPadOS to acknowledge it as the default audio interface. These does feel precarious. But hoping that MOTU will use AudioDriverKit to make their hardware selectable from within iPadOS

Thanks so much for all your info and help. Greatly appreciated. I just looked at my MacBook dock and it's actually a Lenovo after all that. Will leave you in peace now :)

  • Is anyone using a Dell D3100 with an iPad Pro M1 and external monitor? I can get one reasonably cheap via eBay ($60 AUD).

  • Well blow me down. After all that I managed to get it working with what I had. Apple USB-C AV dongle into the iPad and then my little USB 3 powered hub plugged into the USB port of the dongle and keyboard, mouse and audio interface plugged into the hub. Everything worked! My only question is what should I plug into the USB-C power port of the Apple dongle? Is a MacBook Air charger viable or will that provide too much juice? Excuse my ignorance and thanks heaps for everyone's help. x

Since your hub is powered, your iPad charger is likely enough. But you cannot have "too much juice"; the USB-C charger and the device negotiate the power they will supply/accept. So, just do whatever works.
