Playbeat and Loopmix Auv3 Sample Import/Browsing Workarounds? Or am I missing something?

I really love playbeat and loopmix, but to my knowledge, there is no way to easily access samples we've imported into the standalone app.

On my ipad, the auv3 will still show all samples I imported when I look at "all samples," but there are literally thousands and it's not organized in any folder structure (unlike the standalone apps). You can choose the entire sample collection and use the randomize functions, but this means the ENTIRE library is used instead of a single folder or sound pack. The big advantage of using a randomizer IMO is being able to choose the pack or folder you want to pick from, THEN randomizing. Like with Blocs Wave, where you can choose the packs/sample folders to randomize from.

So, in short, I can access either every sample under the sun that was ever imported in one unorganized list, but if I want to be intentional at all with my choices or with the randomization, I'm basically stuck with the factory content. Which sounds good, but that's not why I got these apps. As it stands, they're kind of useless to me since the sample import/access makes the workflow so frustrating.

Does anyone have workarounds or even some correspondence with audio modern that lets us know about any fixes? I feel like the playbeat one has been here forever, and it's really disappointing that the loopmix release has the exact same problem. If I just used these standalone with my hardware, it'd be no big deal....but this basically breaks both apps for me. Please tell me I'm missing something obvious.

  • Instead of importing your samples directly in the Playbeat app, locate the Playbeat 3/Shared Samples folder in On My iPad in the Files app.
Drag your organized sample folders into this location, and the structure remains intact in the Playbeat internal sample browser.

Importing samples directly in the app puts the samples in the User Samples folder, and I can’t see a way to organize those at all. But the Shared Samples folder should work to keep your library organization intact. You can further organize your samples in the app by creating your own packs. You should be able to use these packs to control your samples pool when randomizing, like the prebuilt packs.

  • Not sure about Loopmix. I have it, but just messed around with the built in stuff so far.

Thanks for the help. I tried putting samples in the playbeat shared folder but nothing shows up in the auv3, though it’s in the standalone.

This is on a 2017 pro on iOS 15.7 and an m2 pro on iOS 16.

    Same problem with loopmix

  • Yeah, I see what you mean.

It’s weird. I imported a bunch of free packs off their website in standalone, and those work in the AU.
I started wondering if you need to build the packs in standalone and then they would work like the imported packs.

So, I tried it, and it still screwed up somehow. If you build a pack in standalone, the AU still can’t find the samples in your Shared Samples folder.

Last chance, I exported my created pack to the Files app, deleted it from PB3, then imported the one from Files. Now the AU sees my pack the same as the packs from Audiomodern, and the samples are in the Imported Samples area, in a folder with the same name as my pack.

So, you can create packs in Standalone with your own samples, export those packs to Files, delete the packs from PB3, and Import the packs back into Standalone. Then they will show up correctly in the AU. Painful. 😫

Finally, avoid any file/pack/preset/sample managing in the AU. It tends to crash it.

  • I really hope that @Audiomodern are working on a better file handling system because they themselves see the need for it and even told me prior to release that drag and drop support etc might possibly even make it into the release version. It's been a good month now and still nothing, which is a bit disappointing

  • I feel for you mate. I have a slightly different, but equally annoying, problem with Playbeat. I changed iPads and let the new one install all apps from the old one, including Playbeat. It kept all the names of the presets and samples and even the favourite markings - but not the samples themselves. So now I have an app that looks fully installed if I look at it, but is completely unusable, as it gives an error message with any preset I try to play. And if I try to import the preset again, it says it already has it and then proceeds to reimport it (sometimes randomly failing and quitting a few times before success) but now it also deletes all the favourite markings in the process. Great.

I wrote to them, I got an immediate automated confirmation of receipt along with a promise to help, and then crickets. I'll update here if they do come back.

I have encountered some issues with file/preset handling in pretty much all their apps, so it's not entirely surprising, but this one is the most frustrating so far.

Totally agree. It’s a flow killer. Also, yesterday I imported 400 samples step by step int BUTTERSYNTH, it’s such a shame.

Jesus.... No no no. Everything released now needs good batch import / export and file handling, drag and drop etc. The ability is there, devs need to implement these things

  • I really hope they update it and soon cos it does get miserable importing samples into Playbeat. It turns into a crash fest when I’m doing it as an audio unit as well

  • I’ve asked them on audiomodern forum and got reply:
"Thanks for reaching out and for your feedback. Indeed AUv3 apps can not access the default Playbeat folder the same way the Standalone does. We are facing a few limitations caused by Apple’s SDK in conjunction with our coding framework, JUCE but i can confirm that we are working on a new solution for both Playbeat & Loopmix. Besides that, we will be introducing AudioShare compatibility for all of our apps that handle audio files".

So it's look like they're working on a solution, but same thing they were saying year ago after release. So keep finger crossed.

  • I’m new to playbeat. Just wondering what the best option is right now for importing a a whole bunch of nested sample folders. I’ve initially gone with “add folder “ which I don’t see mentioned above. I guess this is a new option.

  • Cant get Playbeat 3 to play nice with Cubasis 3 at all..it just randomly stops playing after a few bars.

CB3 doesnt seem to connect with it either thru Ableton Link.Do i need to launch it standalone before loading it into a CB3 channel,or any voodoo MIDI tweaks im missing?

    Hmmmm.

    Any help/suggestions much appreciated,thank you.

    Ok update to ^

Ive now disabled Ableton Link in both Playbeat 3 and Cubasis 3 and have loaded up Loopmix inside of CB3 on Channel 1.

With Playbeat 3 Sync ‘off’ everything is perfect,as soon as i switch sync on CB3 plays but always stops after Bar 10 not randomly as i had previously thought.

    Hmmmmmm.
