Is there an app I can use to create original animations? I’m particularly interested in geometry…
Was just wondering, I used STAELLA to create some visuals for a song I made, but it’s kind of limiting in what you can do, and feels a bit dated in terms of the effects and stuff. What i would really like is an app that would allow me to create geometric shapes that could be animated, or simple 3d vector graphics I could rotate and stuff for minimalistic visuals. I’m thinking something like the gifs by Erik Soderberg:

Because of storage limitation, I offloaded VS from my device... but can't it handle that?
If you're up to work on a computer, I would recommend playing with Blender
Maybe vs. Can you record sequences? Thanks!
Here are some free and paid options: https://www.webtopic.com/tweening-apps/
And if you own the art/painting/drawing app "Procreate" that might be your best bet on iOS. The biggest problem with hand-animating geometry is getting it to look consistent, so there might be some kind of basic 3D animation app which could also address your needs.
If you're not already familiar with 3D modeling and animation, you might want to find something more rudimentary first. Blender is quite complex for free pro-level software. I understand it also has a 2D animation mode.
You might want to look into Apple's "Motion" instead, which has a more limited feature set, but might be perfect for the kind of animated geometric work you showed (this is desktop-only software). https://apps.apple.com/us/app/motion/id434290957?mt=12
Also found this for iOS: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/animation-creator-hd-express/id380381736
And if you know how to create layered artwork already this might be interesting: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/slide-ar/id1439367917
@sevenape if you do want to give blender a look let me know and I’ll happily spend an hour on zoom with you getting some basics down…
There is a very fun and easy iOS app called Looom.
Since it’s geometric shapes you’re interested in, it’d be worth having a look at Stick Nodes Animator https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/stick-nodes-pro-animator/id932128168
There’s a free version too so you can have a look. Very easy to create geometric shapes and animate them.
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/iornament-crafter-build-platonic-solids-and-more/id1183533412
iornament crafter might give you most of what you want. Low cost, and can do neat stuff depending on what you feed. Try it with line drawings, patterns or whatever.
I just found another alternative means of doing this. It's a bit of money, but if it's really what you're looking for...
https://www.omnigeometry.com
And here's a free online animation tool which might be interesting.
https://lottiefiles.com
Frax also has video output available https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fra/id568827824
And Frax into iornament can be interesting (ignore my jumpy gif settings, just minimizing frames.)

Any vector program that allows you to blend between two shapes would do
You might have to plan a bit and put stuff on separate layers but it’s doable
Not exactly what you’re asking for but DECO SKETCH https://apps.apple.com/us/app/deco-sketch/id494100553 is lots of fun and very geometric
Here's another idea: https://www.svgator.com/vector-animation-software
And they have a free tier and paid tiers.
VOSC might be right up your alley, though it is once again not exactly what you are seeking. https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/vosc-visual-particle-synth/id592599278
Edit: here's a linkto a clip I made with VOSC.
Try Vectornator. It’s free on the App Store and has no IAP.
And another one though not exactly what you are looking for.
https://apps.apple.com/de/app/epicycloids/id1392462688
+1 for alight motion
You should be able to set up something like that geometry animation in there
Edit: also, bricolage should be capable… haven’t used it for ages. Looks like semi-recent update, too
So does that still work pretty good on newer devices? I noticed it hasn’t been updated in a while
I am using at 2018 iPad Pro, on which it is running famously on iOS 16 (newest update). It seems that recording has actually been improved since last I tried to.
That's an illustration program, which could be used to create assets for animation in another program. But it has no animation feature.
Dunno if this’ll uplod properly but just knocked it up with alight, changing number of polygon sides from 3 to 6 back to 3 on timeline.
For sure this could be improved without vast difficulty
Try this one. It has a decent amount of options.
And you can use your own pictures on the sides.
You must use screenrecording to save your result.
https://apps.apple.com/be/app/kaleidotile/id1374849164
It’s free. Also, check out his other apps. Some nice ones. All free.
Gif example has reduced framerate.
Another go at it, this time playing with a couple of squares and circles… ok imma stop
If you wanted to animate music, I would definitely suggest VS.
Also check out KodeLife and Codea, Shaderific, etc. Your sample is 2D vector graphics.
K-Machine (the beautiful disaster) might click with you.
If you’re into coding, it’s definitely worth checking out Processing, which is a JavaScript variant, and would definitely allow you to create animations like this.
https://processing.org/examples
@mojozart K-machine wont work on my 10.5 ipad with ios15
I got Frax and Iornament crafter yesterday, based on these tips. A lot of fun. Bizarre thing is that apple is trying to charge me more than the ioranamant app price itself to get the 'duo bundle', this despite the fact I didn't buy the app on sales price.
BTW, is there much difference between Iornament and Iornament Pro?
This app is pretty cool! Pity the text is so damn small, but this is up my street for sure
In a similar vain.. p5.js allows you to create simple to complex animation and export to gifs, etc. Think it may be based on processing, but much easier to pick up and even run and test in browser. Does work on iPad too in browser. See some examples here https://p5js.org/examples/
For better examples in the Erik Söderberg vain and what can be achieved using p5js see this link : https://giphy.com/search/p5js
Holy potatoes! This blew up while I was asleep!! Thanks very very much for all your responses! I’m going to try them all out today! Thank you thank you all!!
