Why is there no mobile TB Isone, Slate VSX, Dear VR Mix, Airwindows Monitor, CanOpener alternative?

It's blowing my mind that there are zero crossfeed apps. How do you get vocals to sit right in a mix without it? I went mobile to be mobile and produce on headphones, but this is the thing that keeps me tied to IDAM/Mac where I'm monitoring the iPad output within an AU host.

I had hopes that at least Toneboosters would include an algo from Isone into Morphit or release a separate app.

  • Canopener used to be on iOS. I still have it installed on an old iPod Touch. Not sure why they removed it from the store. Didn’t use it for speaker crossover but for the inbuilt EQ. Made the iPod an even better music player than it already was.

Crossfeed simulates sound coming from both sides to each ear, like when you're listening on stereo speakers. It pushes the stereo image back a bit, it's especially good for voices that usually sound like coming from inside your head when listening on headphones.

If you work on an iPad laying flat or angled in front of you and don't have a big screen in your view this effect is even greater because visuals and objects blocking your view also influence what you hear. You get a better feeling for the depth of the music when mixing when the view is free imo.

You can maybe try something like this (free) https://polyversemusic.com/products/wider/
I did some similar utility effect in Drambo by splitting the signal in delayed one with filter and dry one. That is basically what these plugins do, you just play around with amount of delay and EQ.
Don’t know about AUs except Drambo that can purely delay a signal, but there will definitely be some.

Thx for the tip but I prefer a dedicated plugin for this and until I find something I'll just keep using the IDAM method.

I've stumbled upon Room AU, anyone using this for monitoring at the end of a master chain together with Morphit? If you're using it, is the binaural reverb it produces distracting or is it dry and studio like?

  • I hope that one of the many devs out there will develop a decent crossfeed app soon. There is an app called Sienna on the App Store from Acustica Audio and it has presets for different real existing studios, a car environment and even some big famous dance clubs. The results are astonishing. Downside? No AUv3 support and also limited support for playing your files (Dropbox anyone?) The developer could turn Sienna into the perfect crossfeed AUv3 app for iOS. They’re a highly acclaimed developer. It’s worth checking out, though.

  • Is there any 3d positioning plugin? Maybe positioning left channel left and right right could work? 😂

Virtual Room is still available for purchase.

It's not been updated for ages but still works without any issues on my M1 iPadPro, iPadOS17.0.3.

I have that one and don’t like it. Would be nice to have a virtual “room” to position sounds in space. The SWAM string sections software does this.

EDIT: I see Samu just posted this.

  • I really wish can opener would get ported to iOS. That along with Morphit has really helped make my mixes more accurate when using headphones to mix. I’m reluctant to mix on the iPad anymore in fear that it’ll mess up my ear for mixing cos I’ve grown so reliant on that combo lol

  • Could an impulse response simulate a pair of monitors on a treated room?

  • The developers behind CanOpener said they are no longer interested in doing iOS apps, so likely never going to happen.

  • Airwindows is open source, right? So someone could possibly just take that, put it in an auv3 shell, put it on the app store? I suspect chris would be fine with it if you’re not monetizing?
The airwindows stuff is also in vcv rack, so it might be in MiRack?

Yes, it's an unrestricted MIT license and free from the dreaded GPL incompatibility with the App Store.
