Live vocal FX latency - iPad vs hardware

So at some point stacking iPad fx will increase latency right..

I plan to run midi out of my computer interface and sync the vocal delay but then maybe add some extra flavor

Who has experience? what iPad interface you using? How much software you running? In the brainstorming phase
Cheers

Apps like AUM and sims others provide latency compensation.

  • but latency conpensation dont work live, pitch correction for example always add some latency which is imo too big for live usage… but others more normal fxs are ok, small chain of fxs should do the trick, @Janosax can you tell something about acoustic playing and using live fxs on ipad? (vocal is similar to sax, melodica, because we hear always dry sound without latency)

Like @szczyp some FXS adds some live audible latency like pitch shift or some dynamics especially look ahead limiters for example. Most effects like delay chorus or reverb add negligible latency IMO. With sax or voice playing you will compensate while playing so there is no correction needed post recording, with good low latency effects and low latency audio interface (I use Focusrite Solo 32/64 buffers 6/8 ms measured RTL). With recorded midi notes playing on iPad to external hardware then recorded to AUM or other app that’s a different story: you will have to compensate before or post audio recording for added delay (with a midi track timing offset if app allows for before recording or by dragging audio part post recording following audio enveloppe curves to timeline when possible… can be tedious). Ableton Live have great faq on those topics.

  • I have used AUM and mixbus live with vocals and acoustic guitar and was ok cuz I fed both signals from the iPad to the PA. Also recorded it which was fun.
But this setup will not have everything going to the iPad only vocals

Been using an ipad mini 6 for vocal processing for a year, in addition to some hardware pedals.
Audient id4 interface, great quality and very low latency (6ms RTL with 48kHz buffer 64).
Loopy Pro as host for plugins, heaps of fx.
As mentioned, many fx add negligible latency in and of themselves. For the more resource intensive ones it depends on the plugin and the particular compromise between speed and accuracy.

Initially I literally got the ipad for vox JUST to be able to use vocal saturation live, specifically Fabfilter Saturn!
Also the RRS EQ3 which has the 'air band' from the legendary Maag EQ4.
Added a bunch of other things as well.
Running with high quality mode oversampling as base vocal sound, with buffer at 32/64, there's no noticable latency even with precise intricate rap lyrics etc.

    In general its awesome af

  • I run an iPad as a guitar fx every Friday and Saturday night for church. I use Loopy Pro to interface. I have used AUM as well. But work great I just chose loopy pro so I could loop with ease if I need to.

I use a presonus studio 24 as my main interface. No latency issues for me.

  • @Icoustik @TheAudioDabbler thanks for the feedback! ill check out Loopy Pro, AUM is my go to at the moment

  • This is when it pays off to have a beefy (fast) iPad: To be able to set the smallest buffer size without risking it.

True. iPad Pro M1 here. But Also iPhone 14 Pro Max which is incredible and has very similar performance (don’t even overheat). Both can support 32 buffers latency even on live projects with good amount of AUV3 without any hiccups.
